  2. So I haven't said anything about the documentary until now cause I want to wait until the full story was aired. I've always taken a neutral stance on what caused the fire; I sort of wrote off the allegations of Abe Saffron's involvement as mere rumours. Even until I watched it, I was sceptical of this series cause from the promos, it looked very "tabloid" and "sensationalist". Having now finished the series, with all the evidence and witness accounts that was collected, I'm all but certain it was arson and that Abe Saffron plus others were responsible for essentially 7 cases of manslaughter in the best case, murder in the worst case. Quite frankly I'm left feeling completely disgusted. Because of people's greed and desire for power, Sydney lost a fun park full of character that will never be recaptured, even in said park's current form where by all means, the future looks bright. But that will never compare to the fact that 7 people prematurely lost their lives, and many others lost devoted loved ones who they'll never get back. No one deserves to have that happen to them. And knowing what we know now, I'll never look at the 80's era of Luna Park run by Harbourside in a positive light again, despite the fact it gave us the Skylab ferris wheel which is still awesome. But knowing that a bunch of organised criminals hijacked the lease bidding and built a soulless McDonalds looking funfair to use it as a money making machine, with ambitions to turn it into a development complex? It makes me sick. And I tell you what, I've lost a lot of respect for many people in power with what's come to light, whether it's the NSW Police force or Premier Wran; someone who I admired for his efforts in saving Sydney's environment and heritage after Bob Askin's development crazed government among other things. The whole thing has left me fuming about the lack of injustice with this incident. I hope this series leads to a fresh enquiry and even a Royal Commision that finally offers closure after 42 years, and I will campaign and support any calls for such things. This cannot sleep any longer. 7 people deserve their due diligence.

  3. Hell, Seaworld announced they were getting gorillas and hippos before they even realised you couldn’t just buy them from the Special Buys section at Aldi...

  4. Quite an interesting document. I was particularly keen on reading about the conservation of the Art Barton artworks; quite a few need more more attendance than I thought. I'm reminded of what the late Martin Sharp said in "The Art of Fun" documentary; that Coney Island in particular needs a permanent curator to ensure the artefacts within are constantly maintained to high standard. Also pretty amusing how many of Art's paintings were coated over with varnish in the 70's leaving them yellowed; I know Peter Kingston and Martin were kicking themselves for doing that.

  6. The final episode just aired. I don't want to spoil anything but that was incredible. Give it a watch, even if you're not interested in Luna Park. There's also a live Q&A on the ABC News Instagram about the show which is on now

  7. You do realise this is a common thing to do right? Disney and universal have announced attractions years before anything happens. Sea World announced the New Atlantis back in 2019, well before construction began and they are still going

  8. The total estimated cost of the project (including land and infrastructure) for the island and all the elements that were not Disney was 18.1 Billion according to the HK GOVT brief for the project: (It's a looooog read and really dull) https://www.legco.gov.hk/yr99-00/english/hc/papers/brief.pdf Disney put in a small fraction of the total development cost for the area meaning that the HK Govt had little they could 'subsidise' the building with. (especially given most of the 18 Billion was borrowed money according to the brief) PERHAPS Universal Singapore managed to get some Govt funds to subsidise their build? (I have no figures to back it up, I did look) but it is not unexpected for that to have happened given the the expected rise in tourism both local and international that a park of the caliber would draw. However, as @Brad2912 said above, all we have is speculation and ideas based on what we can find, and the experience of people in here, and I very much doubt that anyone with the knowledge as to exactly why it cost as much as it did will be giving that information in ANY forums as it would very likely breach their employment NDA.

  9. It seems you are expecting someone from Disney to jump on here and explain their financial decisions, operations and logistics to you in detail. People have answered your question with the knowledge, thoughts, ideas they have, yet to you keep countering that with "but why...." You're not going to get more than what you've been given.

  11. That would be great but also a strange idea, it's such a small ride. Luna Park does need more of those giant theming elements and ride bridges though because ever since reopening in 2004 most of them disappeared. I still don't understand why the giant wooden blocks from the kids rides and Spider's bridge didn't get moved to Maloney's corner. If they were there it would've made the area much more appealing.

  12. Hi guys, I thought that this document deserved its own topic- it has huge historical and current information contained in its weighty pages. Have a look at the list of contents that are contained within: There are some excellent historical maps of the site- dating back to the 1800's and showing the original shoreline before it was taken over by the Dorman Long Workshops. There is for the first time that I have ever seen a map of the famed Cliff face Tunnel that was used as an air raid shelter during WW II There are condition reports on items of historical value with the park as per below: I have cherry picked a few items from within the document to illustrate what is contained within it. Its a long document but one that is packed with comprehensive information about all things Luna Park, the site, the items of historical significance and its place within the fabric of Sydney and its importance as an historical site, condition reports of the historical artworks within the park and even original plans for Coney Island and the site circa 1935. Please sift through it and enjoy the info that is contained within it- its not everyday that we have such access to so much info regarding a park that is 85 years old . This was posted on the Facebook site Lost Amusement Parks of Sydney and NSW ( a great site- feel free to join) https://www.facebook.com/groups/348435523186489 by one of the contributors there so thanks to him for finding this and bringing it to our attention. Enjoy and cheers! Luna-Park-Sydney-CMP-FINAL-December-2019.pdf
