  1. Just found 2 vids on Youtube that show the inside of Bermuda Triangle during the ride, one vid has the fire when it was working and the other was taken after when it has the neon. So lame how they stopped the fire, it's such a cool looking effect.
  2. I wish I found this topic earlier, last time I went to Sea World was May last year with my sis, she went on the ride when it first opened back in the day and said it was pretty good. I had high expectations coz I had never been on it before, I always remember seeing the fire come out the top of the volcano thing from outside and it was a pretty sweet looking effect but I was disappointed when I went on it. A lot of the effects seemed to be stuffed, lights not working and a few things didn't move properly, the speaker in the boat was working but not very well it was all crackly, the projector screen part was kinda dull and seemed off colour, the disappearing UFO didn't seem to disappear fully and worst of all the fire at the end was replaced by some crappy looking neon and no steam when the boat went down the ramp. When we got off the ride I remember my sis saying "Wow, that was bad it used to be way better." Fair enough the ride is pretty old and of course after years stuff won't work as it should but at least they should have made an effort to fix the broken stuff and not let it deteriorate that bad. I haven't been there for over a year now so hopefully by now they have fixed that stuff(apart from the fire at the end, coz that won't be back anytime soon). If they were planning to gut it they should instead consider an upgrade/full restoration of the ride, although it would be expensive but it would also restore the ride and the parks reputation.
  3. Thanks for putting up the pics, I never knew they had water slides there till I saw those photo's. I would have started going there in the early 90's and now I remember they used to have a carousel where Timezone now is. Didn't get to ride the Ghost Train though coz I was pretty young back when it was there but from the description "GoGoBoy" gave it seems like it was pretty good. I remember seeing it there a few times when it was still operating. They still have Mini Golf there but it's now indoors in Timezone and the outdoor one has been shutdown for years and nothing has been done to it, it just sits there vacant which is a shame. I'm guessing the Carousel or the Ghost Train used to be where the indoor Mini Golf now is. If Grundy's was still open these days it would be like a mini night time amusement park, it's changed so much since then.
  4. Yeah that's right I've seen some pics of it. Does anyone here on the forum have any other old photo's of what Grundy's/Funtasia looked like back in the 80's and 90's?
  5. Anyone here got any old pics of that Mirage place? I vaguely remember it I just want to jog my memory more. Used to love the go cart thing when I was a kid, and I think the old water slide frame is still standing, haven't been out there for a while so I dunno if that's true.
  6. Wow, I'm so glad at least one person read my rant about Tops. That thing took me ages to write. Sorry it's a bit long but I hope it was a good read, and I hope it brought back some memories. Thanks.
  7. Lol the EKKA, I actually went this year. The funniest/stupidest/"lesson of the day" thing happened when my sister and I rode the Zipper (a ride where your inside a cage and it gets flipped and spun over and over until you think you're gonna hurl). Anyway, I went on and removed everything from my pockets except my keys and a bit of cash I had, about halfway through the ride I felt this thing moving slowly up my leg, it was my keys, and they wanted a ride too. So they shot out of my pocket and started rattling around the cage, I was scared for 2 reasons, 1, I didn't want to loose my keys outside the small gaps in the cage, coz we needed them to get home coz we drove. Reason number 2 was that they were bouncing round so much I thought many times they were gonna hit me in the head or something. I found out the hard way that it's really hard trying to catch an object such as a bunch of keys when you're spinning, one second they would be near your hand and just when you're about to catch them and hold onto them tightly gravity would kick in and then they shoot down to your feet and you have to try and stomp on them with your foot. Luckily, my sister and her quick thinking stood on the keys when they landed at the bottom of the cage so they weren't able to get away again. I even asked her before we got on the ride what I should do with my keys, she replied "Just leave them in your pocket, they will be safer there." So next time when I see a sign that says "Please remove all loose objects" I should probably obey it.
  8. Ha ha I did the same thing...sort of, I mean it's kinda the same only I didn't have a dream about it. I watched Final Destination 3 the day before I went to Dreamworld, and when I rode the Cyclone I couldn't help but think about that part in the movie when the roller coaster comes off the tracks and everyone dies, coz the one in the movie looks like it has a similar steel design. An odd topic but a good one.
  9. The fast spinning ride in the round glass part of the building is now a Red Rooster, that's the one I was thinking of but wasn't sure how to describe it. I know someone who might remember the name of that ride, so I'll ask them sometime. The dodgems are still there but I don't remember much of the ghost train. All I remember is that it had a pretty sweet/freaky entrance way.
  10. You can also get an RACQ pass, that allows you access to the rides at Dreamworld at 9am, which is 1 hour before the park officially opens to everyone else. They are good value if you don't wanna wait ages in lines. Rides such as Giant Drop, Tower of Terror, Cyclone, The Claw and the Wipeout are available to ride from 9am if you have this pass.
  11. Wow, Dazzleland is now a gym? That sucks, Top's, which is the Brisbane equivalent of Dazzleland is now Cinemas. However there is a small Replay arcade next to the cinema called "Tops", it's 2 levels, arcade games on the bottom and pool tables and a small internet cafe type thing on the top level. It isn't much but at least it's something.
  12. Ha ha I remember Grundy's, that place was good. Not sure if this is right but was Grundy's just the old school name for Funtasia? I remember back in the day (early/mid 90's) at one stage they used to have a small indoor ghost train and a where Red Rooster now is that used to be a fast spinning ride, can't remember what it was called though, but it was fast. They also used to have outdoor minigolf. But as far as indoor theme parks go, I can only think of Top's and Dazzleland, which has been previously said are now closed and have been turned into something totally different. But as far as indoor arcades go, Funtasia and Galactic Circus are the best I've seen so far that are still in operation today. They are pretty sweet arcade wise, but pretty crappy if you're wanting more of a theme park than arcade. Not sure if they still have this but when I went to Funtasia for schoolies 2005, they had 6 linked Daytona USA and 6 linked Virtua racing games set up, each with 50" screens and motion cabinets, which meant that when you turned a corner on the game, the seat you were sitting in would turn as well. I'm not sure if they still have these set up though, but check it out. Also Funtasia has a Ridge Racer full scale game set up as well, which means that you get into an actual Mazda MX-5 Miata and the game is displayed on a 18 foot screen which is achieved by 2 projectors running simultaneously. definitely worth a try.
  13. It has been rumored that they have temporarily pulled down the Model T cars for the site of the new ride. When work on the new ride is complete the Model T cars will go back to where they were originally, but with probably a slightly different track layout and refurbished cars. The car track will probably go around the ride.
  14. Yeah, earlier this year I went to Dreamworld, coz I havn't been there since 2000, and I was quite disappointed that the Eureka Mine ride was closed for maintenance, I was really looking forward to riding it. I have never been on it but I have heard that it's pretty sweet. I went there on the 31st of March this year (Which kicked ass coz we had a special RACQ pass that allowed us to enter the park an hour before it opened to everyone else. So I was able to ride The Claw, Tower of Terror, Cyclone, Giant drop, with no line ups or waiting, coz there wasn't many people who got in early) and then again 2 weeks later (lucky me, I got the $10.00 return visit thing), I wasn't able to go on the Wipeout the first time I went(which is a ride that's really showing it's age these days) because it was under general maintenance, but two weeks later when I went again it was working and this pleased me I was also kinda hoping that the Eureka mine ride would be open the second time I went as well, but it wasn't and I don't think it will be open again for a while, because the main entrance of the ride was temporarily bordered up with a few tables and chairs in front of it. I suspect that they are currently doing a massive overhaul of the ride and replacing and fixing anything that has had a lot of wear over the years, which could take some time. Seeing as how that was opened in 1987 with the rest of Gold Rush Country. I hope it will be open again soon, so the next time I go there I can finally ride it for the first time(yes, sad I know, I have never ridden the mine ride at dreamworld). P.S: The Giant Drop scared the crap out of me, I never thought it would be that freaky. I almost lost one of my shoes when it was at the top. Trivia: Apparently not all of the Thunderbolt roller-coaster was trashed. Dreamworld kept at least one train and a section of the track, which is now being stored in the back of house area.
  15. Top's Rant I remember going to Top’s with my mum and sister when I was a kid in primary school, I’m now 20 years old and I was probably about 5 the first time I went to Tops. For a kid my age and at that time it was the coolest place in the world. I have probably been there hundreds of times in the past when it was open because it was a cheap day out and it was close to where I lived. I remember my sister and I used to always go there on the school holidays because we had nothing else better to do. That place was sweet, it was a miniature amusement park right in the middle of the city. It had such popular attractions as dodgem cars, a merry-go round, a jumping castle, Ferris wheel, a swinging pirate ship (which looked more like a rocket), a slot car race track (tucked away in the back corner of a small hobby shop on the top level of the Myer center), an arcade, a play ground with a massive ball pit, it even had a large pool table area, which was filled with probably 20 or more tables, which was located on the top level above where the merry go round used to be. But the most famous and iconic attraction of Tops would have to be the Dragon Rollercoaster. The only thing I remember about it was when it used to go through the cave tunnel which was lit up by orange lights on the inside, and it then used to whip round sharp corners of the track. It was fun back in the day, but you could tell it had a great deal of wear over the years it was in operation, it was pretty noisy and clunky in its final years but it was still a good ride. Sadly, Tops closed for the last time in late 2000/early 2001, to make way for a cinema complex, which is lame coz I’d rather go to a mini amusement park then to see a movie any day. The main reason for the closure of Tops was because it just wasn’t making as much money as it used to, I guess people just got sick of it, and developers thought that a Greater Union Hoyts cinema complex would make way more money. Unfortunately, now the fate of the Dragon Coaster is somewhat disappointing. I’ve seen it a few times in Brisbane as a Dragon Train ride that just putts around at about 5 Km/h (not very exciting when compared to what the Dragon was originally used for). Although it is good in a way to see that such a piece of my childhood is still in use today and not rotting away in a junkyard or in storage somewhere. I know I have gone off the topic of roller coasters just a bit, but Tops was possibly the best place ever, although technically tops is still there, (it’s just a small Replay arcade which is located around the other side of the cinemas. There are also a few pool tables on the top level of the arcade to) I’d love to go back in time and relive the glory days. If I had the money to buy the top level of the Myer center, I would convert it back into Tops, not just for me but for everyone who misses it. (Just a bit of trivia: There was also a swinging rocket ship which used to be suspended over the Myer center at Tops, when it swung at full you could see straight down to the bottom level of the Myer center, this ride however was closed down for years because it was deemed unsafe because apparently someone almost fell out of it one time.) I hope this article about Tops brings back some memories.
