My trip to California

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

I've been lurking around this forum for a short while now and figured I'd join in the fun! I'm currently in the US so thought I'd share some of what I've done so far :)

First place I visited was Disneyland. I got a 4 day park hopper ticket which was a good amount of time for a first timer, (especially as I didn't get to the park until 3pm on the first day due to needing a sleep after the flight). It was amazing, I was expecting great things and Disney delivered. The crowds this time of year (my first day there was the 29th of feb) were manageable, except for the friday which was crazy. Favorite rides at Disneyland park were Pirates & Indiana Jones and at California Adventure were Radiator Springs Racers and California Screamin. The theming on Radiator Springs was unbelievable, and I got to ride it a bunch if times thanks to the single rider line.

Next park I did was Knotts Berry Farm. I loved this little park, but was majorly disappointed that both Montezuma's revenge and Xcelerator were down the whole day. Xcelerator was one of the coasters I was looking forward to most on this trip and the staff kept saying it might be back up later in the day but it wasn't. Despite this I still enjoyed my day here. The theming here on the log ride and mine train was really good too. Silver Bullet was great and more forceful than I was expecting. The only inverted coasters I'd ridden before this were both SLCs, Arkham Asylum and Flight Deck (Canada's Wonderland) so the smoothness of this was unbelievable! Hoping that we'll see a B&M in Australia one day.

Next park was the big one, Six Flags Magic Mountain! First ride I went to was X2. It was only running one train, and also broke down while I was in line, so what would have usually been a 20-30min wait turned into an extremely frustrating 2 hour wait... But wow, it was worth it! It was the craziest ride experience I've ever had, and a lot smoother than I was expecting. After this I was thinking about getting the flash pass but it wasn't too busy so decided against it. The other rides I got done were Twisted Colossus, Riddlers Revenge, Scream, Tatsu, Gold Rusher, Apocalypse, Full Throttle, Lex Luther & Viper. They were all fun but Twisted Colossus and Tatsu were my favorites after X2. The air time on TC is ridiculous, and the pretzel loop on Tatsu was insane, I loved it! I can see how some people find it a little too intense though. Also Viper was rough but not as bad as I was expecting (think cyclone on steroids). Lex Luther was a bit of a letdown though. The drop just didn't pack the punch of the Giant Drop for some reason, the restraints were far superior however. The only rides that I wanted to get on and missed were Goliath and Superman, but I've done a hyper coaster before (Behemoth) and the only reason I wanted to do superman was to see how TOT would feel on full speed. I could have rode Goliath at the end of the night but the line was massive, so re-rode TC instead (and got a duel!).

Well there it is, I'm also possibly going to go to season opening day of Six Flags Great Adventure (will depend on budget and itinerary in NYC) so I'll write a post about that too if it happens!

Just watching the ride I saw very few duels :( But even without a duel it's such an amazing experience and I'm very thankful that I got to ride it twice!

Also I should mention that The New Revolution was testing (and looking great!) when I was at MM, and Ghostrider was still being refurbished and has a LOT of new looking wood on it. From the outside looking in it looks like knotts are going all out with this upgrade!

Does Disney ever have a quiet day anymore? I remember going in February 2008 it was basically a ghost town. I've visited the park multiple times at different times of the year since then and can't seem to get just one where it was quiet. Even living up in Calgary we'd fly down in its off season a few times and never got a quiet day. Knott's on the other hand is a different story.

I love hearing peoples reaction to twisted colossus. Easily my favourite ride at the park now.

Thanks for sharing!

Glad you had a good time. Great Adventure is definitely worth it, El Toro is the bomb and there's plenty of other good coasters (hopefully the NJ Transit express buses are running this time of year from Port Authority Bus terminal on 42nd street). Hopefully you'll get back to Knott's while their Halloween Haunt is on, that's a lot of fun.

To expand on the answer - they know when their quiet times are - so they hold special events during those times, launch new parades, or bring back old favourites 'for a limited time'.

It's rare these days for Disney parks to not have something going on - even if it's just a promotion to encourage people back.

DisneyParksBlog also does live webcast events almost every month - be it fantasmic, or the new years fireworks - whatever it is, they just have a knack of getting people to go back!

(And if you missed it - here's the webcast from NYE)
