Doomsday Destroyer review by Richard

Rated 2.5 Intimidating family ride, or tame thrill ride? That's the balance that Doomsday Destroyer strikes. Despite resurrecting a decades-old style of ride seen more at travelling shows, the ride doesn't have the "spin and spew" qualities that it might conjure up by looking at it.

The theme is exceptionally executed, particularly when counting the immersive and interactive environment that surrounds the ride. The super villain interaction is well achieved through RFID wristbands albeit not quite with the same pizzazz as say Universal Studios' Harry Potter wands.

Whether teething issues or not, the ride features a dramatically new grouping and loading procedure. Baskets are provided during the wait so riders can empty their pockets of belongings before they board. Riders are assigned a colour and told to make their way to those seats once the gates open. It's nothing too tricky and will certainly help them fill all seats, but the whole effort requires so much manpower that it's hard to see how this can be a viable or efficient system in the long run. A flat ride like this should churn through the queue; granted it's early days for the ride but Doomsday Destroyer instead sees staff working frantically to achieve maybe a third of the ride's advertised 720 people per hour capacity.

A well-executed ride that adds much needed capacity and variety to Movie World, but at the end of the day it is a simple flat ride that offers a somewhat repetitive ride experience.

Review Criteria

Enjoyment Good

Effectiveness Average

Its name, theme and intimidating stature all indicate thrill ride, but the reality of the experience is a suitable-for-all-ages ride that may scare off some of its biggest potential fans.

Intensity Low

Striking the right balance between spins and thrills without veering into nausea territory.

Rider Comfort Good

The new Intamin harnesses like many modern shoulder restraints are more a lapbar than restrictive "horsecollar" so they sit comfortably, though overzealous attendants go beyond safety towards discomfort with far more force applied during their checks than necessary.

Pacing Good

A spinning ride like this can be a tricky balance between thrills and nausea. Two complete inversions each way seems to be the perfect balance, while the addition of a third during events such as Fright Nights gives it oomph that works well.

Theming/Storyline Very Good

Immersive theming at its best. Even the "please don't sit on the handrails" signage in the queue fit the theme!

Upkeep/Presentation Very Good

Queue/Efficiency Average

A flat ride like this should have throughput much higher and a loading procedure far less complicated and overthought than this.
