One only has to look at Nick Land at SW. Not a huge space, got a few nicely themed kids rides in there that will keep them busy for ages. I took my niece and nephew there a few months back, and I was worried that there wouldn't be enough rides to keep them occupied. I was wrong.

The space you've referred to wouldn't be a great loss, but to update it in a similar fashion to Nick land would really complete the park in my opinion.

kids wb  will never be complete until they replace the looney tunes river ride

There are a few objections our Aussie Parks face with going down the Dark ride path:

    1. The average dumb Aussie punter simply doesn't appreciate a good Dark ride.

Their idea of a Great ride is a huge Coaster or Giant Spin'n'Spew.. The very same people go to Disneyland and leave after a couple of hours thinking the place is "shit for Adults and just for kids". Ask these same people which rides they experienced? Guaranteed it will be only the one's they can see (ie Dumbo, teacups, maybe Matterhorn) and they probably strolled by the best attractions and because they couldn't see what's inside thought "why should I wait half an hour for some shit Dark ride that I can't see....? Answer=Tossers

    2. Ongoing maintenance/ upkeep.

Too many moving parts with animatronics figures,  sets, lighting, fog, audio, on-board fx, motion synchronisation, motion base upkeep, water pumps, steam machines, 3D projection, hydraulics, cooling towers, PLC and all other BOH functions.. the list goes on and of course it depends on the complexity of the ride.

Bottom line is these kinds of rides need A LOT of TLC. Ongoing ROI often often necessitates downgrading the quality and presentation of the 'show' over time (see WWF, LT, BT, BA....

     Scooby-Doo?)

    3. For a Dark ride to be shit hot and appeal to a wider Audience (including the said 'dumb' Aussie) our Park's would have to invest megabucks on a ride system and dynamic show experience to have serious wow factor.

With ongoing upkeep in mind, if our Parks are after a new Dark ride / experience they would be wise to consider screens over AA together with the big BOOM FX that put similes on faces together with a fast and unpredictable motion for a thrilling, yet more inclusive experience.

Surveys and Market research consistently finds that majority of visitors want more Coasters and thrill rides.

Look at the reviews. Rivals is the most sensible and ostentatious investment for MW at this time.

The next Big thing for SW should be a said family/thrill/dark ride experience and compete more directly with DW. I don't see such a ride coming to MW for a very long time.

we have rollercoasters and thrill rides we don't need anymore until they open some family friendly attractions

not everyone loves rollercoasters I don't know how many times it has to be said for everyone to stop been so blindsided

I doubt we'll see another coaster at MW in the next decade. It would be compared to DCR, so if it's not gamechanging it would be considered a poor cousin, and if it is gamechanging it's effectively competing against its own product.

DW desperately needs a quality coaster to bring the crowds back. Nothing brings crowds like coasters (hence the propensity of these being the choice attractions at our parks).

SW desperately needs a coaster too.

Family rides are awesome, and certainly I feel DW probably has the running in that market currently, and that may remain their focus, they don't appear too intent in entering a "my coaster is better than yours" war with MW, due to the investment required.

The important thing to note is that a well-themed immersive dark ride, especially with no existing building to utilise, is going to set you back pretty similar money to what has been spent on DCR. That's when ROI comes in, and will a $30-40m dark family ride have people lining up 200 deep "just incase" it opens today as a new coaster does... the likely answer is no, which is why funds are diverted elsewhere

I never said it needs to be built today I'm just pointing out the next big money attraction needs to be a whole family friendly dark ride - water ride etc

the more rollercoasters - thrill rides they build there just pushing family's away

The supervillains area at MW is as well themed as any universal park I've got recollection of.

WWF whilst dated is well themed

Scooby was, and by all accounts will Return to being, well themed.

I've no doubt family attractions are in the pipeline, but I seriously doubt that equates to a dark ride given the availability of space and cost of building a soundstage/building to house the ride.

**apologies as this is another thread derailed now***

a new dark ride is not going to take up anymore space then another rollercoaster

every park on the gold coast needs some new major whole family friendly attractions like dark rides - water rides etc

if they continue on the every new major attraction needs to be a rollercoaster road then there future is not bright

Or even a ride of Bermuda Triangle standard (can be a completely new theme of course, but definitely movie themed, and PLEASE not DC or Looney Tunes themed! There are many other Warner Bros movies to choose from!

I feel it needs to be a replacement for the LOONY TUNES RIVER RIDE with a looney tunes theme

base a dark ride on a movie will just see the ride become dated

that's the reason WANER BROTHERS CLASSIC'S & THE GRATE GREMLINS ADVENTURE sadly only lasted 10 years

it was removed from the park much too soon tho

  5. just going to put it simple why I no longer care to visit there theme parks

they removed all of the family friendly rides we all grew up with and have mostly replaced them with roller coasters

I don't give a toss about roller coasters

so until they start thinking about those who are not big fans of roller coasters

they have lost me witch I'm sure they don't care about because I'm only one person

  6. about time someone has come out and said removeing the dark rides from our parks without replaceing them with new ones was a mistake witch I have been pointing out for years

the gold coast already has to many roller coasters witch I know most do not agree with but its true

we need new dark rides - water rides something for the whole family to enjoy

DW said they are spending 55 million in the lead up to the games. This money would have already been spent. TI, LS, rumoured WWW slide tower and stuff already planed. Which will still happen because deposits have been paid and contracts signed well in advanced. New rides that were planed a few years ago could be getting built by manufactures now. Like AW's MI3 (flat ride) is being built overseas now and it won't open till September next year.

this is complete speculation on your part tho

we will just have wait see what happens in the future

So SkyWay was removed a few years back. Now VR is closed, and SW are promising a 2019 attraction in what is a tiny, narrow and awkwardly shaped space...

Does this not bode well for the theatre? Maybe a refurb, or a complete removal?

I'm thinking the castle and theatre will also be removed if the new attraction is going to take VR's current position

  9. 4 minutes ago, jake_hunt said:

True, but I don't think a log flume is quite as expensive as you're making out. Considering that Storm Coaster cost $20 million, then Dreamworld should have enough in their budget for a far less-ambitious water ride, even accounting for the LEGO Store, Tiger Island and the costs of the TRR incident.

    and i hope they do

the CEO said that they have not yet made any plans to when and how TRR will be removed yet

we will just have to wait and see what the future holds

  10. 1 minute ago, jake_hunt said:

Surely not another river rapids, just out of respect, but another log flume would be well within their budget, surely? If the 55 million figure is correct, that opens their options to a fairly decent coaster, let alone a log flume. (Forgive me, I'm not 100% sure on the construction costs of a flume. It's been a while since the GC has had a new one...)

I'd say not for a good while just because it would be in bad taste, but a new log flume or water ride should definitely be on the agenda

we can hope we may see a new flume or water ride in the future but its unlikely

the 55 million budget was before the thunder river rapids accident

after been closed for 6 weeks and the lost money it has cost ardent

i don't think they will be spending the planed 55 million now

and the 55 million didn't include having to remove and replace the thunder river rapids with a new ride in the future

Remember DW said they were spending 55 million in the lead up to the Commonwealth games. They have spent 7 million on TI, ?? on Lego store. So there could be a big attraction coming soon. DW do spend money, it just might not be in the area you want. IE referbishments

but remember they were going to spend 55 million before the thunder river rapids accident

the park was closed for 6 weeks witch has lost ardent a lot of money

and they now have a another SBNO ride maybe 2 SBNO rides they now have to plan to remove

and a whole section of the park now SBNO

I don't see them still having 55 million that was planned to be spent let alone the extra $$$ needed to deal with the removal and future replacement of gold rush country

  12. to be honest I seriously doubt dreamworld will ever spend the money it would take to build a new flume or river rapids ride

and I'm sure they also would know it would be seen in bad taste to build a new river rapids ride sadly

this accident is more likely to lead to the big rollercoaster everyone has been wanting - asking them to build for years

witch is something the park does need even tho the gold coast already has to many rollercoasters

  13. I hope as much as anyone that dreamworld do fully recover from the TRR accident

but to be honest  thunder river rapids and the rocky hollow log ride were a few of the only rides I really like - went to dreamworld for

so I really do not have any reason to go to dreamworld now

I will see what attractions they may replace these rides with in the future before I feel like going to dreamworld again

just my honest reactions to the TRR accident

Everybody deals with tragedy their own way. Im much the same, until my trip up next year i don't think i'll fully comprehend what's happened..or that the ride is even closed. Like you said it's just all so surreal right now.

But it does make sense, we're all really passionate about our parks and rides, they've brought us so much happiness and joy.
It's sad to see a ride we've loved so much close in a way we would have never expected.... We all need our own goodbyes.

the reason i don't know when i may visit the park again is becouse the thunder river rapids was one of the only rides in the park i really cared about rideing so with the ride no longer part of the park i dont know when i mite feel like visiting again

I'm sure this idea has been mentioned a year or 2 ago, but a family coaster would be ideal and most realistic, considering there is the big damn storing all the water for the River Rapids. And trying to fill that wouldn't be easy or cheap. I think the Memorial would go where the queue line/entrance of the ride is. And then if they were to remove the mine ride, that could be the queue and station for the new coaster. But I think it would be another couple of years before we see something major happen in the area

We can all dream big on what mite be done with area in the future

But this is ardent we are talking about and anything they do is likely to far below most of our expectations
