  1. An industry colleague of mine is a Senior Disney Executive here in Australia, they have said that Disney have no intention of building a park in Australia in the near future. The population numbers don't justify the capex required for such an investment. They will continue to develop its theatre division (Aladdin opens in August following the success of The Lion King), and continue to promote their US Parks to an Australian audience.

  2. As previous stated, Luna park Melbourne is known as an amusement park. Though it must be said that management in 2001 did refer to the park as "Australia's oldest theme park" in their promotion. Current CEO, Mary Stuart also makes a reference to 'Australia's oldest pleasure park'.

The Coney Island Drop was installed in 2010. It's a bit of a long bow to say, as Colleric did, that it was brought in for the Centenary!

  3. The Harvest Bar was quite good - I also liked the pop up restaurant idea too. Fonda Mexican was operating on Tuesday :)

While I enjoyed the day at Melbourne Show, the ride selection was pretty ordinary. I'd like to see a re-think on the layout. I was surprised that Pirates Revenge was relegated to the back of the grounds (again!), next to the Taipan Coaster.

I believe the RASV did themselves a disservice reducing the size of the grounds and selling some sections to commercial developers. The original Government Pavilion (and former Dog pavilion) sits just outside the grounds next to the train station. It should have been retained, same with the grounds down to Epsom Road that were used for the carnival. This area was sold off to make way for a shopping village.

  4. Linfox does NOT own the Palais Theatre and surrounding carpark. This is Crown Land owned by the State Government. - the City of Port Phillip is deemed to be the Committee of Management under the Crown Land Act 1978. The Palais and surrounding triangle has been deemed temporarily reserved for public purposes under the Land (St Kilda Triangle) Act 2006. The CoPP have leased the theatre to the Palais Theatre Management P/L - this lease is due to expire in 2015.

The CoPP commissioned a comprehensive report in 2012 looking at various upgrades to the theatre and surrounds. This report is informing their ongoing discussion for the site.

  5. Speaking of the Cinema Division though, Can someone up there in the Advertising department notify their Victorian arm that the Cinema on Russell Street is actually no longer called Greater Union(it's Event Cinemas now!)... For what seems like years it's been still called "Greater Union" in their listings! Goes to show how much they care about that partnered "classic 80s multiplex". The slow decades long "lets pretend it doesn't exist" kill-off continues. The only reason it still exists is because of the internal political machinations of Australian Theatres, the now defunct Bourke Street Village, and the property value to Event. It's painfully obvious they're "sitting on it". Otherwise it would have become a fully featured refurbished Village by now, instead of being visually stuck in 1978..

The Russell Street Cinemas are still referred to as Greater Union - Melbourne City Cinemas. The Event Cinemas is the over-arching brand!

  6. The State Library of NSW contains a set of architectral drawings of the original and buildings from Luna Park Melbourne. They also hold drawings from LPS and also LP Glenelg (SA). For at least the last 40 years, LPM has a only had 3 sets of trains, allowing a 2 train operation. The train storage and workshop was at the rear of the river caves. Once upon a time you could see into this area when arriving into the unload area of the station. LPM confirmed to me recently they have 3 trains. Red and green which are currently in service. The blue train is currently being refurbished. In the past, the train colour schemes have varied. At one point, at least 1 of the trains was a mix of red and yellow.
