  1. "Juxtaposed against Thomas' bonus were early indications suggesting the four died for want of piece of updated equipment costing just a few hundred dollars – a limit switch that maintains distance between rafts on the ride which is thought to have failed."

Cheap piece of equipment could have prevented Dreamworld accident - The Sydney Morning Herald

"An independent safety inspector, Shaun Johnson, looked at air receivers on 13 rides in 2012, including the Thunder River Rapids Ride, and deemed all "not fit for service". He was so concerned by Dreamworld's response that he asked Workplace Health and Safety Queensland to mediate.

"The engineering department at Dreamworld did not produce any evidence of having a Quality Management System in place or any previous vessel inspection report," he wrote.

He was reported saying Dreamworld tried to pressure him into changing the 12 non-compliance ratings to compliance ratings. "I told them I wouldn't, I refused to change the report," he told News Corp.

In 2012 an audit log noted that several rides and water slides were in "dire need" of fixing, rust was visible and falling into pools, there were major leaks and cracks on slides and tape was used to cover some rides.

In 2013, a patron had his knee ripped open by metal exposed by worn-down padding. It had not been picked up in maintenance but was fixed soon after.

In 2014, the Australian Workers' Union raised concerns about "a culture of fear" among staff.

"In my opinion, Dreamworld targets employees who speak up," an unnamed employee said in another file released by the industrial relations office.

Since 2010 Dreamworld has faced more than half a dozen lawsuits with most settled out of court."

DREAMWORLD will remain closed until after the funerals are held for the victims killed in Tuesday’s ride disaster.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday afternoon, CEO Craig Davidson confirmed the theme park would not reopen until the funerals of all four victims had been held and all investigations are completed.

Mr Davidson also invited the community to attend a second special candlelight vigil outside the park from 6pm tonight.

“No parts of the park will open until at least after the funerals of the four people who tragically lost their lives” - Dreamworld CEO Craig Davidson.

"With regard to media reports about a Dreamworld worker making abhorrent comments on social media, I was sickened as much as everyone else when I heard this story. This man is not an employee of Dreamworld. We believe he was sub-contractor for a company who managed scaffolding for park refurbishment. He is not an engineer that has worked on rides."

Why do the parents, in this case parent, have to front the media like that?

He handled it incredibly well though.

I honestly have no idea how he made it through that speech. I was almost in tears. My guess is their lawyer advised them that if they gave the press what they wanted now eg a statement then the media wouldn't hound them trying to get one so it's better for them if it is on their own terms. Just my guess

That's not the tone I got from the article at all. I agree with a lot of what is said re: "you could categorise almost anything as risky and there are few guaranteed certainties in life" and having "confidence that theme parks prioritise safety".

You're right though, a bit of an oversight to think that the ride will be running again so soon, but I don't think she meant anything like the words you're putting in her mouth about the incident being an inconvenice to her holiday, you've misinterpreted the point of the article.

I agree with you. She raised some very valid points. Especially how low the risk is dying on a theme park ride. I didn't have any problem with the article either

I find it interesting none of these people raised their so called concerns before this happened. Especially this former employee. Case to grind for being sacked me thinks

the thing is that with the smiler incident the people survived  with the Rapids incident were looking at the worst theme park accident to have ever occurred globally. 4 tragic deaths  which could have very very huge consequenses at best it's a computer / manufacturer malfunction and clears dreamworld and ardent  of any wrong doing at worst it's a maintenance neglect issue or a human error issue someone will get charged with neglect for public safety and 4 counts of manslaughter this is why I believe ardent and dreamworld are keeping very quiet about the incident until the investigation is complete  but I do agree Deborah should have reached out to the families much earlier than she did

How is it the worst ever theme park tragedy to have happened globally when 7 were killed at the Luna Park ghost train in 1979

  6. According to The Project Deb Thomas apparently contacted the family within an hour of the AGM. The family said she seemed genuine and sincere and has offered to pay for their funerals

Also the brother of the brother and sister who were killed released a statement today. He said people should be thinking about the children who had lost their mothers and had to watch them die. He said no one should point fingers and to wait for the investigation to be finished. He then finished his statement by saying if he could trade places with Kate that he would

AWU are pulling post off their Facebook page.   They can do want they want but it would be nice if they explained themselves.   I managed to snip one before it was removed but on reflecting I might just keep it to myself.

@Richard I have not watched the news for a few years now.

Those people should be ashamed of themselves with how much mud they have thrown Dreamworlds way the last few days. If there was really all these problems they were talking about Dreamworld would have had to have fixed them not "ignore them"

You don't think that maybe in the interests of the company and its shareholders to have contracted psychologists and counsellors that suggest the park reopen as soon as possible?

No one has stated the very obvious (and somewhat cynical) truth. Reopening in a memorial capacity is a logical business decision by virtue of how it can improve the company's goodwill and PR standing. It softens the blow of reopening and shows that as a company they are doing everything they can to support the families. It actively encourages the public to come back with the knowledge that money they spend will be helping. Questions of overall safety notwithstanding, business as usual will be the way Dreamworld rebounds from this, and the memorial day is a masterstroke PR activity to facilitate this.

Whatever their reasons were to seek out the advice of counsellors and psychologists on when to reopen they still got that advice and were wanting to follow through with it

  9. I feel sorry for Ardent Entertainment with all the backlash they have been receiving. Ardent Entertainment wanted to do the right thing so they asked psychologists and counsellors how long they should keep the park closed. It was the psychologists and counsellors who told them that they should reopen ASAP. Arden Entertainment were only trying to do the right thing

A bit off topic but I guess on the topic of media...

I watched the Amanda Knox documentary on Netflix last night and one of the main people they were speaking to was one of the reporters...  A true insight to exactly how their minds work...  He said that they didn't really cover anything to do with Rudy Guede (the sole person said to be responsible) as there was more interest and sensational stories to come from the information about Amanda Knox (who was ultimately exonerated)...

I found the documentary interesting to see how the media works and has such a huge impact on the public that they don't care about the truth...  Just what will move newspapers, get people to watch their coverage, etc...

When I think of disgusting media tactics I have just two words to show how the media destroys people even if they have to tell lies to do so:

    Michael Jackson

I have never fully trusted the media when I learned the truth behind Michael and his complete innocence. The media like to destroy anyone as long as they can sell a story. It's one of the reasons I don't watch the nightly news every night
