i dont think SW has room for river, and i think the press release just said plunge.... so let's wait and see... of course, if they keep river at WnW, then it keeps that whole area in use until they build the new additions on the mammoth area.

The safety of the braking system in Scooby?

i was waiting for that. -
ok ok ok so its old news. i get the point!!! lol. i just stumbled across it in my search for flywheel info, hadn't heard about it before, and thought i would pass on the info for those who didnt know! is that a crime? lol just kidding.... ah well. some good construction pics up there though...

clears it up perfectly Richard, thanks a bunch. i spent hours googling it with no luck. i just couldn't understand how the pulley came into it. I didnt understand that this pulley was "fixed" to the cable so to speak. all the pulleys I was thinking of were like a pulley in a chain block, where the cable spun through it freely. i was picturing the pulley side on ( =====(o) to the axle rather than ======| . but anyway, thanks for clearing that up.

you keep getting me confused bus. i was not in entertainment. and I know a lot of rides at WLS that WERE "just cycled a few times". Those that required specific checks, were generally the more advanced or high tech rides. Beast, Demon, Probe and Beastie were generally those with in depth checks. bounty's, zodiac, endeavour, taz, autos, snowy are examples of a ride that was "just cycled" -
Not sure if this has been mentioned yet.... thoughts anyone? Kingda Ka in Six Flags Great Adventure will surpass Top Thrill Dragster in Cedar Point as the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world when it opens in Spring 2005. It will accelerate horizontally from 0 to 128 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds and will be 456 feet tall. Riders will then descend 418 feet back down in a 270-degree spiral, followed by a moment of weightlessness as they soar over a 129-foot-tall hill and then glide back into the station. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingda_Ka http://www.sixflags.com/parks/greatadventu...om/explore.html http://www.amusementpics.com/SFGAdv%202005...onstruction.htm

The safety of the braking system in Scooby?

You never miss a beat bus, ill give you that. I did not want to state "a daily track walk" in case it was not done EVERY day, to give you something to rant on. I did say AT LEAST once a week, and every day is more than once a week, which, as i said, again, was AT LEAST. I was not trying to say that Beast was cycled a few times, i know this is one of the most labour intensive rides in the park to get started, but i WAS saying that most OTHER rides are just cycled a few times. -
sorry mate but i still dont understand... i mean an axle --- --- --- has a pulley--------- on the end of it... how does that work? ========================( o ) i know you're into the engineering sort of thing... do you have a diagram or something?

Is this real? Will discussion be allowed?

Its amazing to see how many posts hit this thread in such a short amount of time... Paul - the section you have highlighted in that photo is the covered walkway. this covered walkway was a "greeny" colour on the top through the bushes. (i think). if i am correct, it is not shadow you are seeing, but just the green walkway. Otherwise, maybe its just cloud cover? theres a bit of it up there, and there could be one little cloud perfectly sized to shadow out that little bit... the brakes are there, the shadows are correct to every degree.... what is the problem??? it is real. its simply as discussed above a matter of colour matching, an old picture thats a little fuzzy, not to mention that the image WAS probably retouched, SLIGHTLY, just to improve the look. but everything in that image was there when the photo was taken. as said before, you'd need George Lucas to get an image to look that real if it were fake. -
its very informative richard, but i still dont understand precisely how it works.... and i dont get how a pulley on the end of the axle causes the coaster to launch...? sorry - im not a mechanically minded person...

I know OF a flywheel, and i have a vague idea of what it is and how it works. Can anyone give a more detailed explaination of what a flywheel is and how it works, and also in particular, how it works for launching coasters and such?

I would have to say that Disneyland's Tomorrowland, in Anaheim CA. it is simple, but effective. I would also like to state that this is about 10 years ago. I don't like some of what Disney has done with Disneyland in the last few years. im not at all happy with the closure of the submarines, the retheming of haunted mansion or space mountain. Favourite ride of all time would be Space Mountain for Theming and overall experience, but thrills is definately montezooma's revenge in Knotts. Knott's have good theming in some areas as well, particularly the little "indian" area, but Tomorrowland takes the cake for me everytime.

i was just saying that, with the exception that it is inverted, and the lift hills are vertical, the design of the giant inverted boomerang, is almost identical to the standard boomerang.
-
Ok so to recap 'I' have never seen on another non-vekoma coaster "THEN DOING IT ALL AGAIN BACKWARDS." the only coaster out of that whole list up there that fits that description, with the exception of the boomerang model itself was the Deja VU. The Deja VU is THE SAME DESIGN as the Boomerang range, with the exception that it is INVERTED, and because of the inversion, the LIFT HILLS are different. This was simply a modification on an existing design - the design I was talking about. For those that are totally brain dead, I have attached pictures to illustrate.

The safety of the braking system in Scooby?
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to pazzap's topic in Theme Park Discussion
i too have experienced this effect on Scooby, but I have seen Scooby's track, and knew about the tyre drive systems before it happened. essentially, if the braking system became non-functional for some reason, as Richard has said, the brakes would be locked up anyway, and you would not make it onto the lift staging area. Asides from this, I believe that Warner Village TP, with the exception of minor incidents on WWFalls (read: major fires destroying half the major lift hill) have a pretty good track record when it comes to maintenance. Anyone who is involved with WBMW - how often does maintenance conduct a full walk-through check of SDSC? I know at Wonderland maintenance essentially just cycled the ride a few times each before the day's operation, but Bush Beast usually got a full track-walk at least once a week... how often does SDSC get the same treatment? -
Like so many other people, my vote is probably biased. i will vote for demon. In voting, I have taken into account the following: Yes. Demon is one of the most mass produced coasters in the world No. Just because its mass produced, doenst make it a bad coaster. Yes. It was mass produced because it was a GOOD coaster (and cheap too) I have been on cyclone 4 times. I have lost count of how many times I rode Demon. Cyclone's poor attempt at themeing has only gone downhill since it was created. Demon's theming suited the area, and allowing the area to fall into dereliction fit right with the theme. Cyclone's experience itself is mediocre at best, and this dulling of the senses is probably as a result of the hours of queue time you have just spent putting you to sleep. While it is a unique coaster, no individual element is itself unique. Demon, while it is a mass produced clone, has something I have never seen on another non-vekoma coaster - the boomerang element. not only is there nothing like going upside down, bending left, righting up, bending right, upside down, and then topping off a loop for good measure, but then doing it all again backwards! I have been on demon so many times, I can guarantee I have sat in every seat in every car. I can tell you exactly when it will drop from lift 1, AND from lift 2, no matter where I am sitting. I have myself operated this ride, and while it may have been a piece of crap, that was Sunway's doing, and no fault of the ride or the park it was in. Dreamworld goes "we're about to lose thunderbolt. we need another coaster in here so we dont lose our crowds to WBMW.... BUY THE BIG DIPPER ON THE CHEAP! WOO HOO!" yes wonderland bought titan second hand, but it wasnt a rush job because they thought they were going to lose business... Cyclone is a unique ride design, but it has no unique elements. its like a leggo kit - get a heap of pieces out of a box and join it together. Demon's boomerang was something unique to Vekoma at the time. you had to get it straight from vekoma, nobody else could make it for you...

I think it was jazzland or something in the states had a big old coaster, that everyone in the surrounding area tried and petitioned to save for years, with posters, t-shirts and the like, and eventually, they demolished it. it was a smallish coaster like a wild mouse or something, traditional wooden coaster, and they brought it down with a simple bulldozer...

ahhhhhhhh here comes the capacity issues again. I'd be interested to see a discussion put forth on the same IDENTICAL ride put in both DW, and WBMW, and how the different capacity issues would pan out - for example, (i know they're not the same, but similar coasters for comparison) Lethal Weapon - it has a really long alleyway to set the scene, observation area, outdoor queue line, "in-cinema" waiting area showing the movie, to get you further in the mood, then outside again to dogs barking, with plenty of props all over the place, graffiti, billboards to read, seeing the riders get strapped in, despatched, as well as seeing the riders come back, and the look on their faces terrorising you if you're a first time rider. then you get into the divided queue lines, more things to read, more of the ride to watch and listen to, as well as some very entertaining ride ops who do their best to keep you occupied. not to mention the overhead "police radio" for you to listen to, and any and all safety announcements the ops make. Cyclone - enter the first few metres of the spiral queue line and theres plenty of props and things to read, then you come out above the cyclone machine, and there are flashing lights that dont work, i beleive tehre is a blackboard lower down on the queue line, and then essentially all you have to look at is the cyclone machine, the people opposite you in the spiral, and idiots walking past you who are queue jumping. you get to the top where you stand there for a cycle, before an op comes and gets you, counts you on, the best theming of the ride with the bouncy floor and all the rest is wasted by the fact that you're rushed past it, to sit there and stare at blank, dark doors, until everyone has gotten off the train and clear of the exit. then and only then, do you see the train close up for the first time, with no previous instruction on how to get in, buckle up, loose articles etc. Now I dont think I have slewed these representations, and I think its a pretty accurate and concise description of the average experience on each coaster. Now as kenny said, we're talking about an IDENTICAL ride, proposed for each park.... regardless of capacity of the actual ride, which queueing design and entertainment system works better... and therefore - how long will the queue wait be PERCEIVED at WBMW compared to DW....

personally I feel that this attraction's position next to movie world will be its downfall. the majority of its patronage would be by the tour buses etc, and of course, predominantly international tourists. the problem is, when you stay at the gold coast, everything you want is right there, the beach, the hotel, shops, attractions... everything, including heaps of other things to do like sea world. Movie World and Wet N Wild mostly ride on the back of the three park super pass, and them along with dreamworld ride and rely mostly on transport systems such as the surfside tour buses. most people will not want to spend 40 minutes on a bus to see this style of show, and a meal, only to pack back onto a bus to go home. I dont know about everyone else but I dont want to have a hearty meal, and then jump on a bus to get my dinner jolted around on a bumpy tour coach to get me back to my hotel. i'd prefer take a stroll down the promenade to a restaurant, and stroll back to my hotel to walk off the thousand calories that I've just consumed... I think thats the reason why the original site would have been planned near sea world... perhaps an alternate site would be better, somewhere closer to the promenade... -

an interesting article, but considerably more believeable if it were to come from SMH than Telecrap. at present, he has no site in mind, apparently no financial backing, and a very obscure concept at best. i'll get excited when he has property, money, and a more concrete idea of exactly what he plans to build. the concept itself doesnt give over much information as to what kind of attractions they will have. it sounds more like an educational walk-through adventure, such as old sydney town or the like, rather than a thrill destination. im not going to hold my breath on this, but perhaps my kids will go with their friends as teenagers to the opening day... we'll see what becomes of it, if anything. >>>Sidenote: Richard, you better redesign the forums to allow room for a Spyland subtopic... lmao.
