Luna Park Sydney 'Gateway' Re-Installed
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to Jamberoo Fan's topic in Theme Park Discussion
For those that can't get past a paywall, the article is dated January 26th, and says: Edit: AUSTLII search hasn't revealed any decision published as yet http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/cases/nsw/NSWLEC/2017/ Most recent case published (yesterday) had it's hearing on 1 February (which was for the construction of a carport - so fairly simplistic matter) - so i'd expect that the outcome of the above issue with LPS may take a little while longer to resolve. -

As @Tim Dasco stated on the previous page - i think it's more likely that they had scheduled track arrival well in advance, and anticipated that groundwork would take a lot longer than it did - we were blessed (or cursed depending on your view) over the summer season with very little rain - minimal storms and bad weather meant progress on groundworks proceeded rapidly, and i'm inclined to think that that is the predominant reason for the site to sit idle. Agree that the wrap would look nasty plastered over this nice new fence, but depending on the width of the messaging, I would like to see them bring it back - and perhaps cut the wrap into sections the width of each panel\panels between each pillar. it'd add to the hype for irregular guests to see some messaging - although if the september date has been pushed already, they may not want to perpetuate that message. -

it wouldn't take much to unbolt a fence panel - and i think you'll find that they will probably do that at some point to build the ride. -

I really don't think any of our parks can afford to install something that only has a 3 year shelf life. -

but that's just it @Santa07 - most theming dates quickly. Scooby came out in 2002 - and you don't know it (the ride is quite true to the film). Lethal Weapon 4 was 1998 - and while the movie didn't really lend anything to the ride - it was just 'stunt driving' in the film, prologued by some car chase scenes in a theatre - it was a fitting theme (so you don't miss anything there). So generic theming is timeless. theming to an IP puts an expiry date on that theme. In addition, using IP costs licensing fees, meaning you either need more money to do it, or you cheap out on some things so you can buy the license. As I understand it - a Doctor attraction would be a nightmare, as the park would need to inject funds regularly to stay current - and then even amongst fans - which doctor do you feature? original? latest? most popular? Fact is - in arguing for IP you've also proven the case against it - ToT's theme is... who knows... but we all ride it. Why do we need to bring expensive IP into it, if we all ride it anyway? -
It's no Hyper skeet - but for the park the size and location that it is, to have this calibre on the drawing board is pretty cool - drop tower looks to be same as hair raiser at LPS (i think the photo IS hair raiser?), air race looks like the same as pandamonium, star fly is one we haven't seen locally - (except a traveller i think?), Windstarz looks like either a modernised paratrooper style ride, or otherwise similar to Gingy's Gliders. Putting aside the Mouse and Octopus replacements, Aerobat is the only one i'm unfamiliar with - but it looks 'enterprise-ish' so i'm sticking with that for the minute. What we've got coming to a park that by most standards is small, but growing in both popularity and size, is an array of attractions that have been successfully operated (predominantly at Dreamworld) and been popular for years. I don't want AW to blow their wad on some monster attraction and then have no money in the bank to weather the storms or follow up with the next big thing - so for the minute i'm quite happy that they've got plans for these relatively successful, diverse and appealing rides. If we saw a new one every year, without any more removals - i could see them steadily growing to a point they would be viable for bigger, more wow level attractions. all this is good news for the park, and good news for the park, is usually good news for us.

Tiger Island - Valentines Day 2017

I totally get that the new set up maximises viewing for everyone @Slick and I don't doubt that the view up top is fantastic - it's the division between the two. 'grass is always greener' perspective - but taking your view on it - reverse what i said previously - how would you feel if you were stuck against the fence in the corner, and didn't have the wide sweeping breathtaking view that those up top got? the separation gives the appearance that one is better than the other. if there were somehow tables going from ground floor all the way up the pit to the top, it wouldn't have that appearance. that's all. -

Personally - i would think much of it would be able to be stored within the same area that the footing framework was laid out. The area is already fenced, and keeping it on the same side of the driveway means less likelihood that they will need to close entry \ exit to move pieces onto the site during the day. Failing that - bottom end of AOS would be a more convenient, less congested place to store it. -

Tiger Island - Valentines Day 2017
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to themagician's topic in Theme Park Discussion
That looks really awkward - I mean how would you feel if you were the people up on the top step - vs. the people who literally have a front row seat? i think, it would be different in my eyes if there were tables tiered all the way up - but for the upward seating pit to be such a large gap between one row of tables and the other, it just makes the rear seats seem so much less valuable. I know it'd be hard to do with the seating the way that it is, but it wouldn't take much to design a 'front facing' seating on the grandstand - kind of the way they do it at AOS - not every row - maybe every second - slot some specially designed tables into some sort of mount designed for the purpose and you really increase your capacity for 'dinner and a show' in the venue (obviously, front facing seating probably isn't suited to Valentine's Day - but for other events that are more about the tigers \ show, and less about the 'staring into each other's eyes' bit - it would totally work) Does look like it was a good night though. -

It travels through time? Jesus. What rock do you live under that you'd heard of Dr Who, but not ANY of the franchises you've dot pointed? I think you're reaching to say 'at least Australians have heard of it' - amongst people I know - more people would know of at least 6 out of 7 of those dot points before Doctor Who. And if I were surveyed and asked if i'd heard of Dr Who, my answer would be yes - I have heard of it, but that wouldn't be validation of plans to build a themed land to it - i've heard of testicular cancer too - but i don't want to ride it... -

[Wishful Thinking] The Gold Rush Replacement
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to Reanimated35's topic in Theme Park Discussion
Why does everything need to have an IP attached to it? Universal Singapore - although many of it's lands were directly associated to a particular franchise - still ran with 'Sci Fi City' which enabled them to have a diverse attraction theme base fitting the same general idea, which now houses both Battlestar Galactica and Transformers. I really think the park is ok with a generic, unlicensed theme. they have their own mascots. they have several IP franchises in park - dreamworks, ABCkids\Wiggles, now Lego. I think they can do without additional licensing fees to be honest. just go with something straightforward, without an IP that lends itself well to a variety of rides and attractions. The best thing is that, unlike most rides we see lately - where they have to shoehorn the ride into an existing themed area and try and make it fit (or not - see MDMC) - in this case they can masterplan the entire area - they could incorporate GD and BS into the 'zone' and theme appropriately, demolish the rest and start again. They aren't restricted by the fact that the current area is themed to something they need to work around. Clean slate time - wipe the board clean and start with a blank canvas - but most importantly - get some creative thinkers involved. Maybe they should find out who designed the Doomsday \ Villains Unleashed area, and poach them to design it... -

I know there's a lot of people out there that will flame me for this - but please no. Whovians aren't exactly appealing to a mainstream audience. I get there are Dr Who attractions in the UK - but the show was developed by the BBC, and that's the core fan base... but I just don't see the popularity here. Using that logic, we'd be better to have an attraction themed to Agro Vation or Ozzie Ostrich. This may appeal to all ages, but not everyone of each age group would relate to it - you would have to know the story to understand the concept behind the tardis and how it works. Fish Fingers and Custard, i'm assuming, is a particular food favourite of the Doctor, and I can see why a Whovian would know that - unfortunately anyone who doesn't watch the program would just think it was weird. You may not like DC - but everyone has heard of Superman, Batman (even Kindergarteners will tell you they know he smells), Wonder Woman - the entire DC franchise has far more mainstream appeal - with decades of comics, and countless films so diverse that everyone can find one that they enjoy. Likewise with Harry Potter - even if you ignore the books - i know most people have seen the movies - but there is broad appeal there - from the light hearted PG rated kids film that was Philosopher's Stone right down to the deep dark voyage of discovery with death and torture - Most people out there could tell you a few things about the series. I just don't feel that Dr Who is mainstream enough to appeal as broadly as Push is suggesting. -

it's natural to put the smallest person at the front though. Parents will usually do that with their kids so they can see etc. As for riding with two complete strangers - What kid wants to ride sandwiched between two large people to ride a waterslide? Clarifying point - the NET is NOT made of metal. its a standard 'rope weave' made of a fibrous or nylon string. ONLY the SUPPORT POLES are made of METAL. Engineering this idea would have been a little harder, but i've been toying over the design idea of having support poles outside the ride envelope, with spring tensioned lines holding up the netting - would that have possibly changed it from fatal to carpet burn? (like this, but with longer lines and greater clearance between support poles and netting): -

Thanks Skeet. I never looked at Verruckt that closely TBH - i read about it being built and then I read about the accident and left it at that. So the poor kid was 'decapitated' - on what? surely these 'net hoops' aren't solid steel...? -

I disagree. 'theme park versions' of Australia don't sell well anymore. the real thing is too easily obtainable and accessible to put on some staged, contrived exaggeration of a performance piece. Take a look at Aussie World (don't get me wrong, i love the park, but the OTT 'Aussie'isms are just cringeworthy) You want Australiana - Corroboree (and the animal attractions within\surrounding) delivers. everything else is an import anyway. Gold rush \ old mining town \ old west as a theme is something stapled into most parks around the world. it works. it's easy to do, and its easy to theme rides to it... bit I disagree it isn't overly exciting or welcoming or WOW. One only has to take a look at places like Knott's or Disney to see truly well pulled off themes - and despite an entire world for a single (albeit great) attraction - Wild West Falls area is also something spectacularly and fantastically done - all it needed was a few outlets \ stalls \ carts, and another 2 or so rides and that area would have been spot on. -

Will admit, i didn't look too closely, and wasn't aware they were testing photos. I thought they must have been amateur photos \ stills from a video of the incident - so you're 100% right about the misleading nature. -
I swear we had a thread for this, but the only mention of the incident I can find is in the off topic thread.
