Wet n Wild sued for traumatic Aqualoop ride

And anyone who's been in a courtroom during a liability proceeding can tell you that what the judge considers to be 'adequate' signage may be different to your interpretation of it. -

Wet n Wild sued for traumatic Aqualoop ride
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to westical's topic in Theme Park Discussion
Yes, but her claim isn't that she COULD have been injured, it's that she was AFRAID of being injured - because she was unaware that the slide has a built in safety system. It's not a matter of the staff halting the attraction - the dispatch system physically won't allow another rider to be launched whilst there is still a rider in the tube - it has a 'block' system built into it - this is what all the conduits are running all over the place. Her claim goes further that BECAUSE she didn't know there was a built in safety mechanism, she was fearful someone would come down on top of her, and due to that, she hauled herself out by her arm, causing injury, rather than calmly pushing the door open and standing up. The whole basis for her claim is that WnW should have appropriate and adequate signage, or staff instruction informing riders that they may not make it around the loop, and what will happen in the event that they do not complete the loop. Don't misunderstand me - I don't support the claim, and Bemaniak is right in saying that the whole 'no suing us, even if we're negligent' statements in the terms and conditions of entry aren't legally enforceable. A contract (which the conditions of entry are) cannot exclude your rights that are applicable under the law - and the law says you have the right to sue for damages in the event that someone's negligence has caused you a loss. I wouldn't say that it's there because of 'really really dumb' people, but by making those statements, they are providing a 'blanket' statement that they aren't liable for any loss, injury or damage, however caused (unless specifically required by law). While it may not include the bracketed statement, you will find somewhere in the fine print that none of the conditions can preclude anything that you are legally entitled to. By providing the blanket, they're effectively ruling out any other possibilities, except those that you're legally entitled to. Having said that, i've seen a few details about the case, and it isn't as open and shut as it would seem. There is a possibility that she will win. The burden of proof for what she is claiming is mainly in how she 'felt'. If she truly 'felt' the way she claims to (which is open to interpretation by a bunch of psychologists psychiatrists), she may succeed. -
What should MW and DW's next roller coasters be?
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to POP's topic in Theme Park Discussion
Kujotess, I want to know more about you. I get the impression you're female, and about 12-15 years old. That isn't intended to be an insult, and I apologise if my impression is incorrect, but it's just how you behave. First of all - what people love about roller coasters varies. If you go back and read some of the older threads on here about 'truly' good woodies, you will see that many people expect woodies to be a little rough, fast and 'out of control'. It's the adrenaline, the thrill that makes them so great. Steel coasters are (mostly) smooth, and they give thrills by quick segways and inversions or high speed. Woodies are more about the 'unstable, out of control' feeling - the feeling that you could fall out, that you're thrown about like a rag doll, all whilst remaining perfectly safe. You have obviously never ridden a wooden coaster - so until you actually have - your opinions are baseless. So shut up. ] -
Thanks Joz. knew someone else would remember...

I'm not disputing the claim made about MW not owning the lockers, but I am of the belief that they do. There was a discussion thread on this very forum quite a while ago about the lockers in the parks being bought out-right by the parks. I just can't find it.
-
I would like to see MW set up their lockers the way Universal Singapore has (and I presume many other parks which I haven't seen) that permit you to store for a limited time (based on the ride's wait time) for free. Any additional storage beyond that timeframe will cost money. If it's hard administratively to do so, then charge $1, and refund it if you 'check out' of the locker before the time limit. $2 is still small change, but a 100% increase makes it sound far worse - and it is. They own the lockers, so surely their costs aren't increasing... I can't justify the price increase, and those stating that the ride is effectively an upcharge are correct. Even if a passholder wants to jump into the park for an hour of an afternoon - they still must carry their pass (unless they walk through the gate, get a pass-out, go back to their car to drop off their pass and then re-enter), they still have to carry coins to use the lockers just to store their bloody pass!

2012 International Additions
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to themeparkgc's topic in Theme Park Discussion
Trains to the airport are definitely possible - but you would have had to have changed trains at Sunny Bay as the Disney Trains cannot enter the 'main lines' and no 'main line trains' enter the Disney spur. Like Gazza said - Tsing Yi is your best option interchange wise for getting to the airport - and it's a very roundabout way of getting there. It may be cheaper with an octopus card, but the Taxis are far quicker. -
SE and GL both have the same policy - no loose items. They will however permit you to take medical aids (including prescription glasses) to the gates. GL has a set of pigeon holes they have just for that purpose, whereas SE utilises a crappy old plastic basket.

Precisely. While I love the Disneyland spur line (and the trains look fantastic!) - if you've only got 8 hours, a taxi is FAR more reliable - and those guys are insanely fast. The stretch of highway between Disney and the Airport has about 20 speed cameras on it... but they only ever switch on a couple of them at a time - the taxi drivers know this - and have detectors fitted in their cars.... they'll fly along at 140+, and as soon as the detector beeps, they just slow right down (as does almost every other car on the road) it's just the 'done thing' over there. -

DaptoFunlandGuy replied to themeparkgc's topic in Theme Park Discussion
HKDL is actually only a 5 minute taxi ride (when your taxi driver has a speed camera detector installed and doesn't obey the speed limits) from HK airport - they're both on an island separate to HK island. If you have 8 hours spare - make the trip (even if this little beauty isn't open yet) as there is still a lot of worthwhile stuff to see and do. -
A predominantly casual workforce, who are already well paid with casual loadings will fill any stop-gaps. If you have any contracted workers with specific hours - you give them a choice of working early shift, or late shift - and then fill the holes with casuals, or in the case of non-essential services, such as harry potter shop, you just don't open it for the full day. I've seen a theme park do extended hours, and seen how their staffing was adjusted to compensate. Point is - those that actually have contracted hours - can still work their normal run. You hire in extras to fill the busy period. If the park did a late-trade once a month, most staff would be used to that, and it wouldn't be hard for each contract of employment to have a new clause entered into it at renewal time. Casual everything - from F&B, Retail street sales of flashy crap - to performers would be on call - know their dates etc. Point is - guests won't know if there is supposed to be six or 8 dancers in the parade - so if you get some no shows, no big deal? Most attractions have 'variable' staffing - being able to operate an attraction with 2,4 or 6 staff (and so on), so it's always adjustable. There is no need to change the start time... just the finish. Offer $5 after 5pm (obviously at a higher price than that) to pull locals in for a night-time trip to the park too - if you keep the park operating after 5pm, rather than closing at 5 and reopening at 6 or whatever like is done for fright nights etc, would keep guests IN the park for Dinner, rather than giving them an hour or so to head to Maccas... you make your extra money on F&B, and guarantee that flashy crap continues to sell well... it's a no brainer on extra costs, and staffing isn't hard - theres plenty of UNI students happy to pick up an extra shift outside of study hours.
-
Kujo - you seem to take quite a negative slant on a number of issues discussed on the forums here... have you been to White Christmas andor Fright Nights? Have you attempted to ride some of these attractions during those events? In total, through 3 Hallowe'en events and 2 Christmas ones, i've ridden TWO rides total - once I got on superman (early enough that it wasn't dark and therefore wasn't anything out of the ordinary) and once on Lethal (which was JUST dark enough, but wasn't the most enjoyable ride at the time). This doesn't count the corporate christmas party I had there last year, where I did get to experience superman in the dark TWICE, and batwing twice in the space of an hour. I think the point of Squid's post was that if the park had more regular night-time events, more people would be able to experience the additional thrill of riding some of our fantastic rides in the dark. Whilst I'm sure there are plenty of riders - few people feel like queueing for 2 hours to ride a roller coaster when the event is only open for 4 hours or so. Most people go to the FrightNights mazes, or the Christmas 'special' attractions as they are something new and unique - Squid is calling for a run-of-the-mill night-time opening (or extended trading day) like Dreamworld does with their Screamworld attraction... and if it were regular enough, it wouldn't necessarily be a capacity crowd reduced operation & staffing type situation. By now i'm sure that you've stopped reading because like you've said in reply to one of my other posts - you've read it, but forgot it all - if you're going to comment, then you should read the responses - and if you're going to respond, then you should address the argument, not restate your own, and ignore those points raised by the respondent. In short - the simple statement was that more night-time openings were needed, that weren't just 'special events' or 'limited time only' type deals - just the same old park, open in the dark - with maybe a little fancy lighting and a special night-time show, or parade, or something. Your statement about frightnights and white christmas being sufficient is therefore invalid, moot, ridiculous, and pure 'fail'. Now - ignore that.

glad to see it's getting back to business. This is to be a key part of our wedding ceremony, so hopefully they've fixed these problems once and for all. Although - to say it's got 7 or 8 years left in it - it is getting on in years...

Expansions start at Jamberoo Action Park
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to JackBenjaminBrissenden's topic in Theme Park Discussion
I've ridden the toboggans with film equipment - and had to control the lever on the toboggan with my foot... pretty well brake free to whole way down. Although I did have special permission to shoot in the park, the best way (if you don't have too much of a lineup behind you) is to wait at least 2 greens before commencing your run - usually you can't catch up to the slowies when you do that! -
Expansions start at Jamberoo Action Park
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to JackBenjaminBrissenden's topic in Theme Park Discussion
I think this is their next step in order to compete with W&WS. Jamberoo has a market - people know it's there. W&WS won't be offering the 'same' experience as Jamberoo is still anchored by their toboggans. The upgrades to the in-roads and such should make it less of a pain to travel to (that was sorely needed). Jamberoo are a destination in themselves, so they should be alright. At the very least - this will 'keep the bastards honest' in both parks and keep expansion coming consistently with both having succession plans, and expansion plans in place... unlike WWW that had plans, but no land to expand on. -
Then why the change from LT Village to WB Kids? Because it's more recognisable and current. I didn't say LT don't have a place in the park, I just said - not the extravaganza they used to - the area is now themed WB Kids, and this gives the park the freedom and the flexibility to utilise other WB children's based licensing. I've done shows and events - even children's shows - and I found Kwazy Kwistmas a poor showing. I've never seen what's up rock, but when a child who is the target demographic says it isn't a good show, and a prepinfants school teacher says the same thing, i'm inclined to believe them. You're entitled to your opinion, i'm not saying you're wrong or I'm right - i'm just saying, from my personal (and somewhat educated) opinion, it's not a good show. I'm glad you (and several others) have raised the comparison between LT and Disney characters. And yes - you're right - Mickey Mouse's Clubhouse - hell I'm pretty sure theres at least 4 different disney channels available on pay television - the point isn't the last movie they made (I used space jam as an example of currency, not the yardstick of it) - the point is that Disney continues to market (and market well) their flagship characters. The LT group are part of WB - VRTP only own license to them - they don't own the brand - and WB just don't seem to be interested in plugging the brand like Disney are. Ok - so I didn't know about some of the more recent LT films - shows how 'blockbuster' they were. Children of today still know 'Mickey Mouse'... ok - they probably don't know Horace Horse or Clarabelle Cow, Brer Bear, or even Pluto for some... but your staple characters - everything from Mickey, Minnie, Chip n Dale, Goofy and Donald Duck are still out there and popular - Hidden Mickeys in everything Disney does, from hotel rooms to the shape of pools, the brand hasn't been abandoned. They may not be releasing feature films, but the characters are still there - on everything from TV ads promoting Disneyland (although Buzz Lightyear takes the stage in the most recent one), to 3 or 4 pay tv channels that continue to show classic disney alongside the new generation - that is - Pixar characters etc. I'm not calling for a removal of the LT brand from the park - I'm just saying that the marketing of that brand - both by WB in general, as well as VRTP isn't anywhere near Disney. There are many themes that could be worked into the LTRR replacement that would still fit WB Kids, and have relevance, without utilising the LT brand - will they do that? No - they'll probably stick with LT - but while you'll generally get kids recognising Bugs, Daffy, Elmer, Tweety and Sylvester, not so many will recognise Coyote, Foghorn, Speedy, or Granny. I've deliberately left off Marvin, Taz and RoadRunner because their popularity is debatable - for some they're their favourites, and for others - they've never heard of them. And at the end of the day - i'm not suggesting the park remove LT, my main point was that the relevance of LT in a WESTERN themed area doesn't work. The show, in it's current form doesn't work (based on hearsay), and my opinion is that if it's anything like Kwazy - it DOESN'T WORK. FYI - I stayed for the whole Kwazy show, despite my thoughts on it - because i didn't want to judge it based on half a show. And I don't buy 'it's a children's show' - I've seen theme parks on the same and lower budgets put together a childrens show, with childrens characters that are more of a struggle than LT (think HB) - and still have popularity, good reviews, and plenty of revisits. I've seen Mr Croaker put together some great (and some REALLY shit) shows in his time - and I wouldn't be surprised if he had an involvement in Whats Up Rock... It's worse than the current iteration of the seal show at SW. Lastly - i'm not 'dissing' anything. I'm providing a critique - something that most people in showbusiness are used to - both positive and negative. Most people in the business enjoy receiving critique because it helps them identify where they can improve. I recently saw a very large-scale production, and happen to know someone who works on the technical crew of that show. Apart from being told that i'd enjoy the show, I was given no further information before I saw the show. After I saw it, I was asked what I thought - and I provided a slightly disjointed, but completely honest viewpoint on many aspects of the show, including the technical side of things (being somewhat involved in that technical aspect myself). Many issues I raised in that feedback were things that this person agreed with me on as flaws or faults that weren't great, but in most cases couldn't be helped or couldn't be changed. I had not a single issue or complaint that this person either wasn't already aware of and couldn't fix, or simply had no control over. My point is - if Kwazy is anything like Whats up, and I assume it would follow a fairly similar running order - it needs a change - a revamp - an overhaul. This was all I intended in my original post, and is still all i'm saying now. Having an LT show, on the other side of the park to the children's area isn't the best fit, made worse by the fact that SOME of the characters in the show are not recognisable to it's target audience, and worse still by the corny, dumbed-down storylines.
-
No - Kwazy Kwistmas was bad. And according to it's target audience - so is What's Up Rock. The problem is that LT are no longer current. Space Jam was your last big LT moment IMO - and that was almost 20 years ago. Theres a reason LT Village became WB Kids - because Kids these days can relate more to a 'generalised' WB theme than they can to Looney Tunes. 40 Year old women holding on to their last vestige of childhood with Tweety are really all thats left. There will always be a place for LT - but not the big extravaganza of days gone by - take a look at the children's area at Sea World - how many licensed themes has it been through now - at least 3? Parks need to keep their children's attractions current in order to keep interest.
-
That would be me. Pretty sure VRTP are now exclusively Fujifilm - if you were outside the Kodak store - you were in Coomera! Good to hear the streetshow stuff still has a presence. Personally I steer well clear of Main Street throughout the middle of the day to avoid the crush that occurs with those shows. The sooner the back-roads between superman and scooby are opened back up the better. I didn't mention it at the time, but the day I went on AA by myself for an hour - we had a heavily pregnant cousin of mine who also has a 5 year old. Having never seen What's Up Rock myself, and knowing it's meant for the littl'uns, I suggested they not miss that show. Now - My cousin is a prepinfant-primary school teacher - she teaches K-2 in sydney and I would expect is very used to the brain-numbing entertainment that children of these ages find fascinating - her 5 year old turned to her 5 minutes in and said 'mummy this is not a nice show. can we go back to the roller coaster? (he's less than an inch over the RRRC height limit - and it was his first time). At White Christmas, we saw the 'christmas' themed show, which I imagine isn't too different from What's Up Rock (without the christmas songs and theming). While i'd expect Christmas (being seasonal, and usually cobbled together whilst still performing the daily show) to be a little 'off' but the What's Up Rock show has been running for years. Half the people in the showstage left by the time the show was half way through. This show needs an overhaul. Does anyone remember when the WB LT show stage was actually IN WBKLTVillage? (it was where RRRC is now). It just seems ridiculous to have a show stage in a western themed area, on the other side of the park, showing a kid's show that doesn't really appeal to kids anyway. I may be biased here - but I know a professional illusionist who has worked in two Australian Theme Parks already that would fit perfectly into the show stage... and provide a show that would soak up MORE crowds, MORE often, and for LONGER... and with Rappa on the payroll, the technical modifications required for the stage would be easy. (I've just seen the improvements to AOS)...

re: the Goldie the Clown announcement - and 'leaking' - if the people who 'leaked' it are not employees of the park, and they found out - they have every right to post whatever the hell they want, unless the person who told them asked them to keep it in confidence. Another 'theme park' "website" contacting them and asking them to take it down, without any publicly known affiliation with the park is just ridiculous. If the park management, or Goldie asked them to take it down, then sure... but it's not like the impending announcement of a new ride, or a multimillion dollar show... it's a long running street performer who has had a good solid 20 year run at it, and the park has decided to go in another direction (although the theme of their current direction doesn't appeal to me). As an aside - I have no affiliations with any parks, or 'theme park "websites" except parkz. I think it's great that all those 'facebook' "websites" keep on top of things - constantly in touch with the fan base and with enough spare time to visit the park constantly - real-time information is the one thing Parkz hasn't been able to offer - mainly because the majority of those involved have day jobs - so it's good to 'fill that gap' - I just wish you guys on opposite sides of the fence would stop your back biting at each other - striving to one-up the other guy. Keep the personal stuff out of your public realm - and do it in PM... and to the other guy - if it comes in PM - keep it there. Don't post it publicly to your followers to say 'hey - look at what they said to me!' I predict that in 5-7 years, we'll see a dramatic improvement to the online presence of theme park enthusiasts in Australia - mainly because the site-owners will be able to vote by then. No offence intended... Just sayin. -
Well the gold renewal price is the only price - there is no 'new' or 'upgrade' price for gold
