Roller Coaster Crash at Alton Towers
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to iwerks's topic in Theme Park Discussion
WTF is wrong with the media these days. have we become so conditioned to senseless violence, injury and tragedy that we have to sensationalise this sort of thing? To date, I don't believe that any major airline model aircraft is completely incident free - even the A380 has had some major mishaps (ok im not sure about dreamliner but give it time) - but people still flock to airports every day... bloody sickos. -

Gold Coast almost got Disneyland.

The operating entity in most of the international parks is still a joint venture between Disney Parks and an entity that has no other business in the industry. VRTP is another business in the industry, so it's not going to happen. That'd be like asking my accountant's 4 year old son to do my tax return, and me saying 'it's ok - he can do it - you just make sure you keep an eye on him while he does.' So my accountant can't do the work he does, because he has to concentrate on supervising his son, and in the meantime his son is incapable of doing the job his father does, so he ends up just doodling all over it in Crayon. VRTP would doodle all over Disney Operations in crayon because they wouldn't have the faintest idea how to manage a real crowd. It'd be belly up before the gates opened. -
I don't know about War and Peace - thats my average post length. You make some good points Lev - and was kind of what i was trying to say in terms of building a test track.

Disneyland Resort Australia brainstorm idea

Even if your source is correct, your quote is still wrong, as Walt was far more educated than to say "Disneyland well never complete" as opposed to "will never be complete" The spirit of your message is there, but the quote isn't correct - is all i'm saying. -
Idea for a thrilling Disney Coaster
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to coasterdude44's topic in Theme Park Discussion
I disagree. None of those (with perhaps the exception of California Screamin') are pure thrill rides. They are adventures, they are experiences. What Jjuttp has said rings true for me. i wouldn't be able to quote word for word, but Disney is on record saying something to that effect. they don't want the 'thrill' market, and are quite happy for Six Flags type parks to dominate the 'biggest' 'tallest' 'fastest' thrill ride dick measuring contest. Disney is about suspending belief and going on an adventure. not 'thrills'. if you find the ride thrilling whilst on the adventure - then thats a bonus. -
What would make an "Aussie" park?

Nope. only 5 steps required in any reanimated plan. -

^I know, but in context the discussion isn't about anybody doing anything - so it doesn't really work in context. Besides "that doesn't even make sense Push" is something Parkz members say to make fun of Pushbuttons. -
Disneyland Resort Australia brainstorm idea
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to omega237's topic in Theme Park Discussion
Seems like you're just importing existing ideas into the park. You're also putting this forward as a DL-Australia, but building it far bigger than any current park - including the original. Also - You've misquoted Walt, who actually said candy palace, or candy kitchen. I don't think you get both.Same with Crystal Arts and Crystal Palace. Plus - i think you've got too many Palaces... or is that Palaci? Less of a brainstorm, more of a regurgitation. -

I don't see Disney ever licensing their IP to a competitor. -
Retail? No. Just no. WnW has quite enough retail. They also have quite enough F&B, IMO. They are not going to impact on their competition up the road with a new hot dog stand or dog tag machine. what they need is a new groundbreaking slide \ water attraction. Triple Vortex has so far gone unanswered by WnWGC - and that sees them lagging behind.

Except the comment was made in response to comments about the dangerousness of the smoke. I doubt Reanimated is going through there at speed, but he obviously observed that it was an issue. I'm pretty sure others have commented \ complained about the thickness of the fog too. I'm kind of in two camps about this - On the one hand - I agree with Rappa, but on the other, I see Reanimated's point - I've been to several FN's, one of which was spent in a wheelchair. It doesn't matter how slowly you go through the fog if some dipshit comes full tilt at you from the other direction... and therein lies the problem. The issue is this happens mainly in two places (which do happen to get the most fog) - Main Street, and Studio Alley. You could probably install a dividing fence to encourage one-way flows, but there'd always be the dickhead that ignored it, and crowd controllers could only do so much if a bunch of kids go tearing through at high speed. You definitely could not do the same thing on Main Street. So what do you do? I have no idea. I don't think the fog should be ditched, but I too agree there is a safety concern there. Not an issue - just a concern. It's fine enough to say 'everyone should just slow down' but you aren't getting that message through to a bunch of immature teens who care about nobody but themselves. Suggestions?

but would the construction of a test track for the El Loco have revealed this fault? Let's say the cause of the failure was metal fatigue - the ride has operated for over 3 years before the incident. Could they possibly have put the a prototype through that much testing before constructing the MW version? How much testing would be appropriate?
-
13 years on - it's getting on in years. This should be the location of the next major installation at WnW - which has been quite neglected of late - it's time for whirlpool springs to go and be replaced by something better.
-
the forces were more intense than a lazy river - you did go a bit faster, but I agree - it's current usage as a set of spas is wasted.
-
Considering that is the bulk of the ride cost - it's a very expensive exercise. When you produce 1000 Ferraris, you can afford to build 4 or 5 of them for impact and crash tests. When you produce 6 El Locos, a tester isn't really in the budget. Efficiency of their operations is lacking, I totally agree - however I feel like the double-wide cars are worth it - and i'm not even considering capacity when I say that. Purely for the 'floorless' \ 'wingrider' aspect - not having track under you when you sit on the outside edges is the best, plus (as has been noted) the forces on the edges are also elevated. I'd like to see them pull off a 6-wide or 8-wide car - but no way they could do that with the current track design - it would have to go bigger.
-
^based on assumption and deduction, not fact. I'm not suggesting it is or is not the cause, but in the absence of an official finding of fact, we can only speculate that it is a design flaw, and not a lack of maintenance or other similar issue.
-
Like with anything these days - engineers are able to design and simulate almost every stress the component will be exposed to before it is physically built. I have no doubt such a large company who has pulled of so many different ride designs would have determined that the bogey design was within limits of the stresses placed on it. So either - we had a poorly manufactured bogey assembly that should have failed QA, or a poorly maintained one. These companies don't work with 'theory' alone, and you can hardly call the computer aided design process 'theory'. I don't think there is anything wrong with the track... so I didn't expect them to do much with that. The wheel assemblies is where the problem lies, i should think - and in that scenario - we've had numerous reports of 'trains are gone' 'trains are back' 'trains are on the track' 'trains have water dummies' - so i think we can safely assume the wheel assemblies have had some work done - offsite - and been thoroughly tested. What we need is a really good quality close up photo of both old and new assemblies to see if anything is noticeably different.
-
TBH i enjoyed the whirlpool far more than the spas, and yes, it looks horrible as a collection of spas. They stopped converting it well over 5 years ago, but i think it was quite a bit longer than that. the green shapes in the ring are where the spas are - the entire area would be covered in what i'll call playground grip padding, with jets similar to Calypso. it's older than you might think.

Idea for a thrilling Disney Coaster
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to coasterdude44's topic in Theme Park Discussion
i can visualise it, and i don't mind the idea. Not sure I can see Disney doing it unless they build a new park and implemented it right from the start. I'd love to see it done though. -
Eureka Mountain Mine Ride reopening discussion
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to rappa's topic in Theme Park Discussion
The exit only sign is the only thing you've raised that I take issue with. the Eureka sign isn't an issue - there is quite a lot of signs on buildings in all theme parks that are just there 'for show'. the mountain - likewise is just a bit of theming. We're in gold rush country, and the last thing we want to see is the bare back wall of the concrete cinema over in the next land - so it's cleverly hidden behind a mountain in the mountainous gold rush country... yes - everything else fits... except the track... hmmmm... see - the track itself fits the gold rush theme - mine carts need track to go in and out of the mine, don't they? And when a mine is abandoned, they don't usually remove the track do they? The Eureka structure actually fits the gold rush theme better than you give it credit for. The Exit sign is the only thing in my opinion that looks 'out of place' - and it's painted on - it wouldn't be hard to paint over it if it was that big of an issue.
