Parkz News Sea World's Sea Viper closes after 32 yearsDaptoFunlandGuy replied to Parkz News's topic in Theme Park Discussion Don't forget - when Wonderland first opened in 1985 - many of it's rides were second hand from other parks, and many of them lasted almost the park's entire life. It is possible if the ride has been well maintained. Demon hasn't. In other News - Joz was on the money 4 years ago... Posted by joz on 05 March 2010 - 02:26 AM in Theme Park Discussion The thing is that the Corkscrew train was pretty comfortable to sit in, the new trains are not. Even when you're in the station in the new trains the seats have random bits of plastic and metal that randomly jab into your back/side. They're not nice to sit in when you're stationary, the sad thing is that means now when you're going around the track you can now feel the jolts that have always been there but the train didn't pass on. Perhaps next time Kumbak design a new train someone should sit in them, just to see if the seats by themselves are comfortable to sit in, rather then just making sure they look cool*. * I don't think that they do look cool, nor do I consider "Sea Viper" an upgrade or an improvement. I used to think Corkscrew was such a marketing icon it was pretty much untouchable. Now I think that Corkscrew's footprint, combined the plot of land that used to house the Pirate Ship, as well as some of the lake is plenty of room for a BIG new coaster. Sorry to double post - when Viper was first launched, someone posted close-up photos of the step-treads on the train - they were customised rubber treads with the Viper logo on them - can anyone point me to a photo of these?

No - it couldn't. Wild West as an area is entirely closed during night events. The ride is closed, the water levels are up, the idiots are drunk, and the neighbours are trying to sleep. I've thought repeatedly about putting something in behind the gates at the back of the smoking area at WWF - it's a nice big open expanse of bitumen that would be incredibly useful for mazes and such... but the access through Wild West shuts it down. It would add a shitload of extra work for the park to: secure the area light it up theme it

Rides @ Disneyland for older people?DaptoFunlandGuy replied to Blake's topic in Theme Park Discussion ^doesn't mean every ride is for everyone. Height limits do preclude you from some experiences. Epileptics are pretty much out for half of fantasyland... there are exceptions.

Australian ride deaths/accidentsDaptoFunlandGuy replied to R2GFifa's topic in Theme Park Discussion Wonderland had a child drowning in the beach (unattended - parents at fault), and a stabbing on one of their nighttime events that may or may not have died. Our parks are small fry in the realm of ride-deaths. I'm unaware of any ride deaths that were a direct result of poor practices by the park involved EXCEPT the LPS ghost train.

Parkz News Sea World's Sea Viper closes after 32 yearsDaptoFunlandGuy replied to Parkz News's topic in Theme Park Discussion Much as i'd love to see the old girl back on shore, and to ride it - purely for sentimental reasons - It would be a horrible choice for all but the most basic, struggling parks wanting to make a leap into the next level of parks.

Australian ride deaths/accidentsDaptoFunlandGuy replied to R2GFifa's topic in Theme Park Discussion I have already suggested the Kumbak Train could be traded up to Dreamworld. I realise several people dislike it, but i think the overly restrictive arm guard is most people's primary issue with it. To be honest i've never had a problem with it but it does prevent you from lifting your arms. I think if the train had a little more clearance at Dreamworld they could do away with those shoulder guards and it might free a rider up. I wouldn't read anything more into the 'we've made a list' comment than "here's our standard P.R. response. We want you to feel like we've taken your suggestion on board, but instead of giving a commitment to your suggestion, we'll say we have other priorities first, and by the time we get around to Cyclone, hopefully you'll have forgotten about your suggestion...oh and don't forget - regardless of what you say on facebook, we've got a plan thats generally set more than a year in advance, so it's unlikely we're going to change our major maintenance plans based on what you tell us online"

Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster fire and lighting effectsDaptoFunlandGuy replied to Spotty's topic in Theme Park Discussion Yes, but on a sim controlled by one person, that would still put the count at at least 4 (gates, dispatch, unload advance and e-stop), and the gates are a two way switch... (i'm sure there'd be a spieler button somewhere along the line also)

Rides @ Disneyland for older people?DaptoFunlandGuy replied to Blake's topic in Theme Park Discussion If they liked scooby, then most of Disneyland will be ok. There isn't much there thats going to be a problem (Space is faster but no more intense than Scoob). Pretty much anything that they CAN'T see before hand is fine. Theres a couple in DCA that they may not be agreeable to, but they'll be able to see them in advance.

Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster fire and lighting effectsDaptoFunlandGuy replied to Spotty's topic in Theme Park Discussion For coasters, wouldn't there be at LEAST 3? 1. Harness lock release (should be two separate buttons) - auto locking harnesses would only need a release button though 2. Gate open close (usually a two-way lever, but can be a button or two) 3. Dispatch 4. E-stop Most of the coaster controls in the sims have those core functions which are mainly the ones needed to play - it's only the additional maintenance breakdown showcontrol lights etc that add complexity... Such as the multi-switchtrack on Cal Screamin'.

Parkz News Sea World's Sea Viper closes after 32 yearsDaptoFunlandGuy replied to Parkz News's topic in Theme Park Discussion While it's true slab construction needs land to settle, in reality, they could put coaster piers in right now (hell - they could put them into the water without all the land reclaimation) so they don't need to wait for land settlement in order to put a footer in. I'd love to see them bring in that B&M but I don't think thats quite what Sea World needs, nor do they seem to like second hand rides as pointed out already. I think Firechaser is probably a winner here - making the most use out of the available space, and expanding a whole new world within the park with other attractions underneath surrounding. Sea World has a very unique opportunity to do something REALLY special here. I wonder whether VRTP will sell any of the old ViperCorkscrew parts like DW did with Thunderbolt.

Village Roadshow and Sanderson set sights on AsiaDaptoFunlandGuy replied to themeparkgc's topic in Theme Park Discussion Yeah... they should come up with an easier simpler name.... something like Fox Studios? Nah - that'd never succeed.

Parkz News Sea World's Sea Viper closes after 32 yearsDaptoFunlandGuy replied to Parkz News's topic in Theme Park Discussion Absolutely Joz - precisely what they need to look at. Hopefully the cupboard isn't too bare after recent investments here and elsewhere. Viper Corkscrew was my wife's first coaster, and my second steel coaster. It holds a special place for us, and will be missed. This was our wedding in 2013. As a side note - Cyclone is ripe for a new (slightly used) train... and I think on Cyclone you'd be able to remove the heavy-duty shoulder guards as well because you won't be going as close as you did on the monorail...

I think we might need a megatruckers topic... - on that - the superyacht move was one good example where the client went with something cheaper, and Johno stepped in to save the day - HHA are expensive for a reason. As for the statement that LIMs should break down less than superman.... Superman uses a flywheel, and a cable. Simplest explanation is a rubber band gun... direct force applied to the train. On the other hand - LIMs or LSMs are all needed to work precisely together for the car to get up to speed. That is several different motors all working towards one goal. To me - it sounds like theres far more than can go wrong with ToT than Superman. As for all the issues with ToT. I recall about a month ago we were all bitching about how much Storm was breaking down. Now we're bitching over a ride that is significantly older than Storm having problems - but somehow it shouldn't be having those problems because they did some unrelated changes 3 years ago?

^^^ But Rappa thats what i'm saying - the USH show kind of treats the show as a bit of a 'history of sfx'... current tech would quickly become obsolete, but it would still be workable in the show, and because the stage isn't full of facade - its a wide open space with lots of things wheeled on and off. Just like the floats are quickly changed over from one event to the next, so to can the trolleys with the effects props... a bit like a magician working a new act into a bigger show - they're all just segments. The old MMSFX show was a good show, but it was 4 simple effects demonstrated across 3 very elaborate sets. Off the top of my head the USH show would have showcased 10 or more effects on a single stage, in about the same amount of time (as guests didn't need to get up and move from one stage to the next)

Doomsday - Potential New Tower Ride at Movie WorldDaptoFunlandGuy replied to Gary86's topic in Theme Park Discussion I don't think we need to retrofit existing rides, or make rides do something they weren't built to do (Giant Drop comes down VERY slowly if the catchcar doesn't release)... but if the park buys a ride that the manufacturer build in optional soft hardcore ride cycles - why can't the park market that angle? Wipeout has multiple different cycles, which are all programmable - it'd be fairly simple to program a cycle that was fast, but still kept the gondola upright. I'd certainly give it a go. Nobody complained when Batride offered motionless rides throughout the day - nor the 4D theatre having motionless seating at the rear of the cinema... Perhaps instead of randomly announcing a 'soft' cycle, they could schedule the times for the ride to run on 'low' - that way you'd know when to turn up for whichever cycle you preferred. I take the point of those who don't believe it should be done that way, but if the ride is capable, then it makes sense for the park to offer both options to widen the demographic that the ride appeals to. For a park - such as movieworld - which struggles to get a 'full-day' visit out of most people, adding a ride that offers both thrills and sedate entertainment seems like a no-brainer to me... the park is sorely lacking in non-coaster rides that appeal to both thrillseekers and families. Everyone talks of how the loss of LTRR has left such a hole... Doomsday as a double-header sounds like a good plan.

Yeah - I think blue screen is a little dated these days, but I could see a mocap type effect show taking place in the showstage. Universal do their SFX show very well, telling it sort of as a history, as much as a demonstration of current tech... The previous SFX show became dated because it was geared to showing people what technology was CURRENT - despite it being 15 years old. For anyone that has seen Universal's current show in Hollywood, it told both the story of the past - with things like matte paintings, blue screens etc, but also brought in mocap and other modern technologies. It'd be a really good thing for MW to bring back to the park. Tech crew on stunt driver could easily work both shows, and the showstage is already set up for lighting, sound, filming, audience management etc... sounds like a very good idea.

I really hope they're going to make the access to that top section better. that narrow pathway isn't suitable for continued expansion...

got some height on that first building at the top - is it still standing? Much to see? I realise there would be some logistics involved, but when there is a working production - I really wish they'd run tours - even if they were upcharge small group tours. For a 'movie' park, its the 'added experience' I could really see adding value to the park. Universal offer a backstage tour kind of deal and while I recognise MW couldn't offer anywhere near that, imagine a nice lunch, back of house tour through the sets of stunt driver, maybe a building facade on main street if its viable and safe, a studio tour through some sets not currently in use (the rock wall for the helicopter scene would be a good example of this). They could market and sell it like their animal adventures (subject to availability on filming). Hell - they could even get the production company to schedule a time when they're likely to be taking a break from filming and bring someone through on a live set. I'm thinking more golf cart than tour tram... but i'm quite sure you'd get enough people to pay it...

Future Additions for Gold Coast Theme ParksDaptoFunlandGuy replied to themeparklover's topic in Theme Park Discussion That sounds like a good idea - it would allow them the freedom to move away from a strictly immersive adventure, and implement some kick-ass coaster-time (with associated storyline of course).. something HKDL at the very least desperately needs (or they could stick with immersive and go with something in line with Transformers) I imagine Iron Man and I just see similar storyline to Superman Escape... underground tour interrupted by token bad guy or event, subsequent rescue by superhero (*cue launch), followed by relevant twisting and turning, diving and looping coaster elements before returning to the station...

Shots look awesome RAC... love the chopper shot! In the first pic - there appears to be a section of highway on the extreme right hand side - any chance of a full-centred shot on that? or is it not what it seems?
