Jet Ski Rescue doesn't run in the rain
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to rival81's topic in Theme Park Discussion
I will say that while I was in the JR queue in the morning, there was a guy in a cherry picker doing welding at the top of th eloop, on the south side. Seems structural issues might be at play. There were also welding screens (thick green semi-see-through plastic attached to metal frames) leaning up against the queue fencing for JR right at th ebottom of the queue where the actual corkscrew element dips to the ground. -
Hahaha, Nev, the Sony SPOS was a great video. I never said I was a fanboy. I believe sony's attempts at still photography are pretty lacklustre, and the pinnacle of that is their Alpha model. Studio soundwise, they are great. Car sound is another matter. Well, as i said, I am an advocate for sony VIDEO systems. I said nothing of their Car Audio (which I agree was great when it was released, but nothing has been done since to continue the brand), however I have to disagree with you on the TV issues. The Bravia engine IS superior. The current Bravia generation was designed with blu-ray in mind, and it may not be noticeable to a lot of people, but there is a BIG difference. The reason Samsung offer the same features as sony is because Samsung flat panels are manufactured in the same place as the Sony flat panels... yep - the Sony Bravia plant... Samsung screens are made by Sony. I had the opportunity when I used to work in north ryde to tour Sony's head office. I was privileged to be able to see through their theatre (yes, they have their own theatre), and also their demonstration centre. A "comparison model" was lined up against a bravia. Both LCD and Plasma were tested against "competitor brands" which were straight off the retail shelves. The only modification that had been made was a piece of electrical tape over the brandname on the unit's bezel. We were encouraged to plug anything possible into the video inputs for these, using a split ('y') cable, that would deliver the EXACT same signal to both screens. Side by side - there is a very big difference, but you cannot compare them in stores for the simple fact that some stores MODIFY the standard settings on certain TVs, depending on which model is more desirable to sell.... brightness, contrast, colour balances, or even just those different modes like "theatre" or "sports". You can never be sure exactly which settings you are looking at. I visited one unnamed store on two different occasions, 2 months apart. The sales guy did not recognise me, and while I provided him with the same "needs", he recommended two different units, and sold them both to me on the same benefits... while putting down the other brand, which played switcheroo the next time i visited. No, I didn't buy from him. But in the end - its all down to personal preference. I think Bravia is a superior image, but I don't have a need for it. I bought a samsung LCD as my main tv, because it was cheaper. I do however use a smaller bravia in my studio, which is slowly getting put back together after my move.

I will be touring the parks over the next few weeks with a DVD handycam, so look forward to some more vids coming our way. For the record - to save answering them later, I use sony vegas movie studio platinum, sony cinescore for music backing, and sony DVD architect to compile and prepare the videos. (And yes, my handycam is Sony also - for those of you keeping track - i am a firm believer in Sony's high quality video capabilities) Anyone else use them? once you've used it, you won't go back....

Jet Ski Rescue doesn't run in the rain
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to rival81's topic in Theme Park Discussion
Jet Rescue doesn't run in the sun either! Ok so I finally got down to ride it on the weekend (sunny sunday) thanks to Q150 passes, and other than it being short, which has been discussed ad nauseum, and with the limited space they've done very well anyway... I don't even get a chance to see the sea lion, i don't see the mural, except from the outside, and i'm very glad that I rode it first thing in the morning, because in the afternoon, at about 4pm-ish, it went down, so we went and bought a drink, came back because it was running, got back into the queue, two cycles... and then BAM - won't despatch from unload. The operator even announced that they were waiting for maintenance to come down and reset the ride "again". :edit: As an aside, while i'm talking about the Q150 - me thinks people didn't think to well about how to implement this idea - since the Q150 needs a photo attached, it wasn't such a good idea that at 11:20AM!!!!!! Sea world still had queues running out into the carpark. Ticket Booth staff were just scanning our ticket and waving us through, telling us to get our photos next time..... woops.... great deal - 1, forward planning - 0 -
Wonderful contributions as always Nathan.... mate seriously, you gotta start thinking ahead of time about what you post, instead of just blurting it out and having to come back and edit it....

Luna Park Sydney court case ruling
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to Ranger Dude's topic in Theme Park Discussion
Tony, see this link http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=q&sou...mp;t=h&z=16 and tell me exactly where you are gunna fit a woodie in - remembering of course that coney island (at the north end) and crystal ballroom (on the south western shorefront) are both heritage listed buildings. I'm not having a go mate - but while they might have been able to fit in some good stuff in the past, it would require a massive re-work of the area, now that the new parking centre etc is there too. -
When I toured the park after it closed, I bought a few items, and they were all wrapped in it. You have to remember that each food outlet probably had their own stock of it, and warehouse probably had a few pallet loads of it too, so 1 corner store doing burgers would probably take a while to get through it all.

Is this in the same pool that was the shark snorkel? We did this a couple of years back (2003 i think?). Mickey is right, there is a lot of liability stuff, and little time in the water, but personally, 20 minutes circling that small pool was enough. Not that it was tiring - just that when you snorkel the same area 10 or 12 times, you tend to have seen it all. Im currently in the middle of a PADI certification, so next time I book an experience, it will be a scuba dive. Personally, I am in support of all the animal experiences. It is both educational for the guest, fundraising for the park and it's marine wildlife efforts, and is one of the few places in australia where you can experience these things in a relatively controlled atmosphere. I did my first animal encounter when I was just 11 years old, and have worked my way through quite a few. The scuba and trainer experiences are the only ones left on my list.

Well considering all our discussions were based on DA applications, I can't really see how they're that much more public than they were when we started discussing them...

Whats Happening To Terror Canyon?
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to Ioanne6's topic in Theme Park Discussion
Joz, even though it's your own post, that deserves quote of the month. Ash - I've worked out what we can do - we'll get wet n wild to install one of those massive hotel-laundromat style washing machines just for you... one that has a lid that locks into place with a padlock. We'll call it "spin cycle" and you can have the very first (and last) ride. Would that be thrilling enough for you? -
And pigs might fly too...

Whats Happening To Terror Canyon?
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to Ioanne6's topic in Theme Park Discussion
WTF are you on Ash? WnW have added more than WWW have in "recent" times, and considering the type of attractions they work with, I can't see them adding much more "thrilling" attractions that they don't already have. A lack of these lately? And what on EARTH do you mean by the grab for attention? I've read the last couple of posts and have NO idea what you're on about. -
Well, if the rubber is actually "flying" into the crowd, it is a real safety issue. Debris could take an eye out, and the natural suggestion would be to place a fine mesh or netting across the lower levels. Of course this is if it isn't an over-exaggeration. As to the smell, it's a car stunt show - and in that vane, I would encourage the toughen up princess attitude.

I'm off to Disneyland Paris in October - what to expect?
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to rival81's topic in Theme Park Discussion
Don - they are certainly not starting from scratch at DL Calif.... I think you might be confusing it with Disney's California Adventure, as opposed to DisneyLAND California. -
Well, on the one attraction remaining that isn't meant to "immerse" you in some form of theme (because this is meant to be behind the scenes, and is the only one that does so) it's really the only attraction with a corporate tie-in. Unlike Bigpond V8 Supercars Redline Mick Doohan's Motocoaster Avis Vintage Cars I won't even start on the shows, although most are nickelodeon \ wiggles, which fits in with the theming of the area... so until MW starts co-branding rollercoasters, I reckon on letting them be with Castrol... Also - you want the run time extended to at least 30 minutes, when it has a poor storyline, and stunts with very little continuity, but you want another 12 or so minutes of it?

Pity this situation can't be applied in the case of Movie World. -
I'm off to Disneyland Paris in October - what to expect?
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to rival81's topic in Theme Park Discussion
Despite the success of the rides, (and I can only comment on DL Calif.) but I found one of the days we spent there just seeing all the shows - not a single ride in the whole day, and it was one of the more memorable, because it wasn't so much "in queues" all day, but really opening our eyes to the park. DL Calif is amazing, and the attention to detail is fantastic. I would say that without the rides, it could still be very much enjoyed by the public attending the shows that they put on. Of course Gazza, you are very much right, the rides are certainly a big ticket to the parks success and popularity, but that one park (and only one) could stand on it's own without rides. -

Unfortunately, the on-topic details I mentioned were moved, but as you can see Bussy, I had similar thoughts and am in complete agreeance with you. -
I am pleasantly surprised.... THAT IS AWESOME

I'm beginning to doubt this offer. If it seems too good to be true.....

Lethal weapon in rain
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to JD_bunnies_supporter's topic in Theme Park Discussion
Certain rides need to close in inclement weather for safety reasons - Superman closes because of the high impact of rain in your face during launch, as well as the launch systems themselves having issues when wet. Bush Beast back at wonderland would have to close in high winds, but only in certain directions, as blowing in certain directions could cause the train to stall, and not make it up the next hill. For many reasons, I have no problem with riding Lethal in the rain - firstly, the majority of the approach to the station is undercover, so while the first set of brakes is exposed, if, for any reason the train were to slip through, there is still plenty of room to stop it with perfectly dry drive wheels next to the maintenance bay. Secondly, it isn't a launched coaster, it's gravity fed - power of rain in your face might become a little annoying, but it's not completely unbearable. Also the fact that it is suspended means that you have the track and bogey elements above you, minimising the rain. Sure, you go upside down, and sideways, but not long enough for the rain to really be a bother. Your main issues seems to be wet components, rather than any comfort aspect though, so to cover that - quite simply - the wheels aren't going to come off the track. Upstops, and guide wheels mean that is physically impossible. They do tell you to slow down when it's raining in a car - a vehicle that has no track, no guide rail, and is free moving and able to hit anything on the same level. It is also under the control of a person, who may or may not be a moron. A coaster train has a set course, with nothing in the way of that course that can be hit. I'm sure Lethal would shut down if the storm turned electrical, but theres no reason to take down a perfectly good (i use the term lightly) coaster for a bit of precipitation. Considering the issues that could happen - and the only one really being that the train could - COULD possibly slip through EVERY brake run, and ALL the drive wheels, and shoot through the station back onto the chain lift. (I know - it's insanely impossible - but we're talking worst case scenario) Even if all the drive wheels (RUBBER drive wheels) managed to somehow become slippery enough that it was POSSIBLE for it to shoot through the station, it is unlikely to result in a crash because if it's raining that hard, it's unlikely that it is set up for two-train operation, and the train can just keep circulating the course until someone is smart enough to turn off the chain lift. -
Such a shame Gazza, that you didn't give it another few goes. Last time I went we had a 5 day pass (this was before DCA), and so every day was spent half-discovering new things, and half-reriding our favourites. I guess Everything in Disneyland needs more than one go to really enjoy it to the fullest. Which as I said is why you have to LISTEN as well as LOOK. From my recollection, there was no immediate explaination for Brer Rabbit's capture - but, if you know the stories well, Brer Bear and Brer Fox were always after Brer Rabbit, and it didn't matter how he was caught, he was always caught. It was the getting away that told the story, and gave the moral. After all, the disney stories are about the good triumphing, not the evil, so to celebrate the success of the villain is really something unnecessary to the story itself - just a simple "oh no, Brer Fox has captured Brer Rabbit again" is all that is ever needed. Think about it this way - while WB quite often showed Sylvester capturing Tweety Bird, how often was that part of the cartoon the same? Tweety sings happily in his cage Sylvester (or his shadow) can be seen sneaking up on the cage Tweety spots him, followed by an innocuous "I tawt I taw a Puddy Tat" Sylvester appears again "I did, I did, I did taw a puddy tat" Sylvester opens the cage, snatches the bird, and runs off the rest of the cartoon is the escape, and while the first points took all of 30 seconds, the remainder of the cartoon is devoted to rescuing tweety, or tweety escaping on his own. The fact that WB show it EVERY SINGLE TIME is, I suppose, because they change some small snippet of the setting, sometimes we see granny in the opening scene, sometimes, the bulldog, sometimes, something else, but the point is that the capture is not what is important, it is the escape. The only exception to this in all of cartoonery is the time when Wile E. actually DOES capture Road Runner, when the capture happens for the first (and only) time. Road Runner, however, STILL escapes, and it is once again good triumphing over evil that we barrack for. So seeing Brer Rabbit captured (if you know the stories) is irrelevant, as that is not what the story and the moral is about (unless you're trying ot teach kids that it's bad to play where you shouldn't... but let's leave that out of a childhood fantasyland.) Oh, and the reason I think WDW's storyline is much more immediately recognisable by comparison is probably because WDW is a park that overall was designed for a much more modern time - when the audience was a little thicker. (no offense to you Richard), but the multitudes obviously needed a tiny little SLAM in the right direction to "get it"
