Movie World Scheduled Maintenance 2024
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to themagician's topic in Theme Park Discussion
I'd love to know yours. Just to recap - you said: The lack of staff was a significant reason The reason why there was a lack of staff is because noone wanted to work and be abused (and paid minimum wage) That was why they are doing recruitment - due to 'mass turnover' Consider the following points: Other than the stalwarts, the workforce skews younger The younger workforce tends to have other commitments including (tertiary) education The younger generation also tend to prioritise their own mental health and are more likely to call out if they aren't 'in the game'. This is actually a good thing as in the past, people have been killed because someone was distracted \ tired \ pre-occupied with other things - it is better to put your hand up and say 'i'm not good enough today' If you're familiar with Ops, you'll know there are many *social* activities, official and unofficial Many of those include the consumption of alcohol It's better to call out sick if you're intoxicated for many many obvious reasons much of the workforce are not full time this provides flexibility in both directions, including for staff who wish to stay on the roster while also working elsewhere The part time and casual employment does increase your turnover, but this is the nature of that style of employment rather than specifically the working conditions The park does several mass-intakes each year, usually leading into a holiday period They've actually done this for years Just because they're advertising for operators, doesn't mean they're desperately low in staff. The time it takes to train operators means they need to be recruiting well in advance of when they actually need them. Guests can be a real pain in the ass, but they're also the reason for their employment. You have bad guests, and good guests, and it does tend to skew a little negative, but that is the nature of working in a customer facing role. People who take that very personally don't last in service related work. Those who succeed learn to deal with it and it flows like water of a duck's back. They are the ones who last, who become stalwarts and heroes in the industry, sticking around to train the next generation. But this is normal. It's been the case for years. It certainly was the case more than 20 years ago when I worked in the industry - so it's not something groundbreakingly new that suddenly explains a 70% shutdown of the park. -
Movie World Website Update 2024
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to themagician's topic in Theme Park Discussion
Agree. They've listed every possible thing as an attraction so the site can say "7 are closed but 14 are open!" but when you look closer, the 14 includes: HWSD HWSD paid upcharge experience Batmobile paid upcharge photo experience The 3:30 parade "meet and greets" Like, if they're going to list the star parade, let's go ahead and list the wonder woman show, the marilyn show, the 'shall we dance' show, the looney tunes dance party, and the Dorothy show? Then we can say that there are NINETEEN open! While i'm being picky, the 'full attraction list' on the website includes all of the above things, but also includes the WB Kids Fun Zone as a precinct, but it is the only precinct on the website, and also it is despite all the attractions INSIDE the WB Kids area being listed separately. And lastly while i'm being ultra pedantic, 'meet and greets' lists a bunch of (but not every) characters - from the 10 different DC Superhero\villain characters, 4 looney tunes characters, plus scooby, shaggy and marilyn. But there is no suggestion of where you might find them, or at what times they might appear. Apart from the missed opportunity of adding an additional 17 attractions to the maintenance page if they'd listed them all separately, it would have been nice if they'd indicated perhaps where the characters would appear at minimum, and perhaps what times they would normally appear too (the showtimes function is great and lists the entire schedule for today - surely it wouldn't be hard to schedule in when certain characters would appear too, no? -
Movie World Website Update 2024

I think it looks good. I like some of the new features, however the new maintenance function, while nice, should compliment the existing calendar, not replace it entirely. I said it in the other thread but i'll say it again here, nobody has considered site accessibility for PWD. Since my reply in the other thread I spent 5 minutes googling and there's a handful of free accessibility checkers online you can just drop your URL into and it gives you a report in less than two minutes. I can't believe not one person in the design process for this site bothered to check it. https://userway.org/accessibility-checker/?url=www.movieworld.com.au Audit (accessibilitychecker.org) WAVE Report of UNTITLED (webaim.org) accessScan - Website Accessibility Checker - Free & Instant - accessiBe -

DaptoFunlandGuy replied to themagician's topic in Theme Park Discussion
I think the site looks nice. clearly they've put some effort into it. I question some of the colour choices though - there's a lot that doesn't pass accessibility standards and is low contrast though. -
yep, and that's likely the case, but since that loop is a closed loop, you could get away with not needing sensors in that area at all - given the start and end is the turntable, and the turntable would need to accommodate sensors for the train facing both directions, you could potentially program it that way, though I see very little reason for doing so.

Movie World Scheduled Maintenance 2024
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to themagician's topic in Theme Park Discussion
There's several possible explanations: They had planned to do it earlier during the downtime, but the parts didn't arrive in time It broke down, and was going to experience a long downtime waiting on parts, so they decided to bring the works forward to avoid a third downtime later when they had planned to do it Look at your calendar - its 7 weeks until end of financial year. Maybe there's a little extra in the budget someone wants to spend this financial year to benefit the balance sheet or tax returns? You're not dreaming it. Their socials did specifically tell someone that they had an issue with the hydraulic launch system. I don't see any room for a reverse launch spike back there, so hopefully it's not too difficult of a fix... -
I think you're both arguing a different issue. The chassis will travel in both a forward and backward direction during the operation of the ride regardless of which train \ orientation it is. Sensors around the track need to be positioned in the correct place to detect the trains. It is not cost effective to duplicate sensors around the entire track to detect a chassis facing the opposite way. they are not doing that. each chassis has sensors \ detectors etc in the same position. When the track direction reverses, that section of track has the sensors positioned to account for that. So for example, say the PLC sensors are positioned on the RIGHT side of the station, in direction of travel *regardless of whether the train faces forwards or backwards). After the first switch, where direction of travel changes, the sensors are still on the same 'side' of the track, but as the direction of travel has changed, from that viewpoint, so have the sensors and they are now on the 'left' After the next switch track, direction of travel changes again, and therefore, the side the sensors are on (in relation to the direction of travel) also changes, but they are still on the same 'side' of the train. *caveat to this is that on some rides, some PLC sensors are not shared \ used by both trains in a multi train operation. They are uniquely placed in order for the ride control system to detect *WHICH* train is present. Easy enough for the ride to know if sensor A detects a train, it is train A, and if sensor B detects a train, it's train B. I hope this all made sense.

it certainly is, and would really benefit from a lazy river style attraction, but I agree, DW needs the investment right now - there's still a huge hole in the lineup and won't be entirely erased by Jungle Rush. -
Just to be clear those latest shots are live on google maps and accessible by all. Nearmap haven't done an update on the GC parks since the December 28 disaster imagery post-storms.

But we come back to the issue already mentioned So if they had a hydraulic lock, and a ratcheting one, the ratcheting lock would be the redundant backup system to the hydraulic, but if you have two ratchets, or two hydraulic cylinders, they can't be their own backups, and a seatbelt is the easiest post-manufacture solution. I've no idea if they would, but honestly it would be fairly easy to run a SRL down the old locker area, and merge it with the fast track line right before the stairs. The only thing worse than a park that forces you through a giftshop at the exit, is forcing you through an empty giftshop. Perhaps with the removal of the locker system and people being able to carry phones \ wallets through, they might be planning on reopening the merch store now that it is more likely to convert into sales? -
Warner Bros. Movie World Park Update
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to ShakeShack's topic in Theme Park Discussion
I mean, the reason for some of the closures is different - things have been closed to facilitate construction, but to say this wasn't the state of the park is quite foolish, when you know full well these forums documented it every single time and it wouldn't take long to go back through the threads and find enough info to prove that. Also, it's not the same complaint every day. First, it was - wow, that looks pretty bad Then, it was - why aren't they doing anything about it? Then, it was - what could they do about it? Now it's - one group cries about how unfair we're being on the park, and don't we know all these things are being done for us? while the rest of us call bullshit and point out the very obvious alternatives they could have followed (that were already mentioned back at step 3) that wouldn't have shown absolute contempt for us as guests. -
Recent Dreamworld marketing / social media
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to GoGoBoy's topic in Theme Park Discussion
See, I have a real problem with that. There are plenty of long term YouTubers out there that bemoan the algorithm. They tell stories of YouTube unsubscribing people from their channels, and they talk about the content they want to make, but can't, because YouTube buries them if they don't hit the right buzzwords and click bait. YouTube has even recently been playing with alternating thumbnails, to test which thumbnail gets more clicks on it. Many makers of serious content have chosen to abandon the Algorithm game, because it doesn't serve their message. They make the content they want to make and choose to communicate with their fans outside of the platform through their own websites or patreon. The Algorithm does lie, because the algorithm serves the platform, not the content producer. -
The Flash: Speed Force coming to Movie World
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to a topic in Theme Park Discussion
From what i've heard, Ops crew only got their hands on the ride in the last few days. Intamin handed over to Tech services, but it wasn't able to be handed to ops for #reasons. Honestly I don't think so. While i'll be the first to pour shit on a park for doing shitty things, I don't think that is the case. Flash should be called 'Murphy's Coaster' - everything that could go wrong, did. They'll soft open as soon as they are able to, and then they'll blitz the advertising with actual on-ride reactions for the next peak season. -

Jesus Christ would someone tell them to stop pouring petrol on the fire already? -
the difference is between cheap and free. Dreamworld weren't charging people to ride TOT when it got turned backwards. Entire coaster trains are reversed on rides overseas on the regular. Not to mention the big Disney rides that have direction changes like Expedition Everest, Big Grizzly Mountain, or even Universal's Mummy coasters (though the Mummy is obviously not family market targeted) If people are going to get sick from going backwards, then the ride is already not for them as it does both. and in case you can't watch the video, here is the actual quote: I'll take that bet. If it is an upcharge, i'll buy you a turnstile. If it isn't, you shut the fuck up. Unless of course, you start the ride backwards, yeah?

IT'S. AN. AUSTRALIAN. REQUIREMENT. I think, if I remember correctly, we learned something about this when Buzzsaw had to be retrofitted to be compliant after a risk was found with the buzz restraints. Essentially part of the restraint failed, and there was lots of talk about 'safety layers'. Something about needing a redundant restraint locking device that did not rely on the same equipment - ie - you can't use a secondary hydraulic cylinder as a backup to your primary hydraulic cylinder, as there is a risk, however minimal, that if one fails, they both do. The easiest solution to this problem was a seatbelt. And also different jurisdiction. When are you going to get it through your head that Australia has different rules and regulations in place and not everything they do overseas can be replicated here? Just one more time - NO. THEY. AREN'T. Unfortunately organisations that provide these documents don't provide them for free, and the average joe who isn't building amusement devices isn't going to fork out $249 to satisfy curiosity. If anyone has a copy, (i'm assuming section 2.8 would be the relevant section here) feel free to post it. It was initially permitted, you're not mistaken. Either someone didn't read the manual correctly and it was pointed out later, or a later audit \ review identified it as an issue and the procedure changed. I mean - that pretty much proves you aren't reading the replies in this thread: Lap bar has to be checked push\pull before seatbelt is secured? Yes you can. Both apply forces to the human body that risk ejection from the ride if the restraint is not properly fitted, and locked. Ironically Tyre Sampson could still be alive today if his harness was fitted with a supplemental seatbelt (even if it were made longer to suit his harness size). -

Two different parks - MW and DW - both have a mack coaster, both have seatbelts, which aren't seen on overseas versions of the rides - and both require the operator to do up the seatbelt, regardless of RFID. Do you think Daddy Dreamworld and Daddy Movie World got together and said "this will really piss off @Dean Barnett" ?? Or do we think some external compliance requirement has forced them to have seatbelts, and required the operator to do it up? -
undoubtedly, that is the case, but didn't we conclude the track would turn the train around several times?

Interesting that they've got two different coloured trains too. We haven't seen that since Lethal Weapon's Red\Blue trains became "purple".

We've been on this merry-go-round with you before. if you're too dense to retain the information explained to you 1000 times before, i'm not sure what hope you have left. The RFID has to be scanned within a time limit after the seatbelt is plugged in. This means the operator has to be present at the time the supplemental restraint is attached. This provides the console operator, and the park, with assurance that the restraint is closed and locked correctly and has been checked before dispatch. They aren't widely used in parks overseas but neither are supplemental restraints (seatbelts), which is what the RFID touch is checking for - so obviously they aren't required on most parks overseas if they don't have seatbelts... 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ -

DaptoFunlandGuy replied to themagician's topic in Theme Park Discussion
It's not about productivity. I really don't understand how you're still beating this dead horse? People are fine with closures in off season, it happens. The issue is closures in off season is normally 2, but max 3 majors at a time. Not SIX. This is like going to timezone, loading up a 2 hour unlimited game card and then finding out that all they have is whack a mole and ski ball. It doesn't matter that it's midweek outside of school holidays. This is going to KFC and they tell you they're out of chicken after you order and pay for your meal. It doesn't matter that its 11am on a wednesday This is going to the Cinema to see Sound Of Music, but all the songs have been edited out. It doesn't matter that its cheap tuesday's morning session This is having a round of golf, but 12 holes on the course are closed for groundworks. It doesn't matter that it's cricket season. How many others can the rest of the forum come up with to try and explain this to you? It's a poor offering. All of the recent google reviews on the park are demonstrating the park is not meeting a minimum expectation. It's not acceptable, and you should feel bad for trying to excuse the poor experience as "those people who were disappointed should have known that they'd have over 70% of their rides down for maintenance" -

DaptoFunlandGuy replied to themagician's topic in Theme Park Discussion
There's something I want to highlight here - You complain the park is price gouging. You admit every corporation does the same thing. You agree the competition does it, but is not as blatant. Everything seems like an upcharge Prices are up offerings are down Every time you go to MW you feel ripped off. There's a very simple solution - STOP GOING TO MOVIEWORLD. At this point i've been saying this for years I might as well set up a recording. So long as people keep lining up to give them money, there is no motivation for them to change their practices. They keep monetising things because those things make a profit. Dreamworld "isn't as blatant" because they're trying to win people back. They need to offer people a reason to visit and see that they've changed and their best option is to be cheaper than the other guy. (but they do still need to make money, it's not a charity). We all knew, when BGH bought into the business, that things were going to change. They were going to cut costs, and increase profits. They need to turn the balance sheet around to make the business more valuable than what they paid for it, and then they want to sell it to make a profit on their purchase price. They're an investment capital business, not a theme park business, and it was always going to happen this way. They are doing whatever makes money. But if you stop paying them... if they stop making money... if the value of the brand, or the business goes down, they will need to change how they do business to improve the reputation, or... eat the loss. The very simple solution to fix all of the bad things happening at the park right now is.... JUST DON'T GO. STOP GIVING THEM MONEY. VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET.
