  1. I think it's ok so long as credit is given, although in terms of your theme park example - i know for a fact that VRTP will ask permission before doing so, i believe on every occasion - sometimes to the frustration of people who say 'its always ok to use my photos' - they still ask.
  2. ^well.. it is good to be bad! Well, the one thought I had was a Justice League communicator type thing:
  3. TBH, now that they have the tech, if the bands sell well, I can see them being used for all sorts of things around the park. Water blasters on WWF anyone? SFX on the facade of spooky coaster? Marilyn Monroe style grating (i know she has one, but done properly, set into the street)
  4. yeah - big coasters such as what we're expecting are difficult to theme to the same level as a flat or dark ride. So long as it's well presented - I don't mind 'Green-Lantern-esque' theming. I thought GL was done rather well TBH.
  5. Well I mean technically they could go with the fastest tube slide south of Sydney but north of Canberra... how specific do you want to get? I dislike parks that trumpet 'record' that is so precise and specific it doesn't really matter...
  6. I particularly love the tribute to BR @Mark Shaw - I love when parks remember and promote their heritage as it were. There was talk for a long time of Dreamworld placing the double loops \ train from Thunderbolt in the fountain at the entry, but it never eventuated. There are many things we have lost from our parks that many of us truly loved, and would have loved to have seen the park keep, display, and maintain. I am hopeful (although I doubt i have any worries here in a park such as yours) that the ship as it lays is adequately maintained and doesn't stagnate with dirty standing water and piles of leaves and debris...
  7. ^I had some network issues at work on thursday, and my workstation has been left on over the weekend waiting for the IT guys to restore it. Seems this went through once the network was restored - but i can't seem to edit it now. Oh well. The problem with it being free is that people who would like to take a turn will most likely be unable to do so as others will continue to just 'hog' the terminal. I'm sure you won't see only rich tourists there. Since an annual pass now costs less than most people's monthly phone \ internet plans, i'm sure many people will see the worth in purchasing a wristband - especially if the park allows them to work on repeated visits. You should be happy - the precinct is sort of a walkthrough area. No monorail though. I guess this means you'll still have something to snark about on their social media posts.
  8. ^Quoting from mobile. Gets em every time. Thanks for the confirmation Mark. You can almost hear the little dreams of perth-based theme park enthusiasts slowly crumpling into a kleenex box. Being honest though, I daresay its going to be a long while before any other parks in Aus get one either. *pulls out kleenex*
  9. I assume they are more like magic bands - RFID chip inside a relatively durable strap of some sort that can be reused - just as the Harry Potter wands can be reused on return trips. I think @Brad2912's comment was because @Theme Park Ninja said 'fellow worker'. The use of the word 'fellow' indicates that the other person is of similar standing to the person speaking - ie: "my fellow americans" implies the speaker, and the listeners are all american. If you were to say 'a fellow cyclist and I' implies you are both cyclists. So saying 'a fellow worker' implies you are both workers. If the 'worker', being the other person, was a dude, you could say 'a worker fellow', but thats a little old school these days.
  10. I would have thought that Verruckt would hold fastest tube slide. Unlikely a tornado is going to take that away from something that is just raw drop \ speed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verrückt_(water_slide)
  11. yes my bet as far as all the effects still not working well is that the park decided to open with what they had so as to ensure adequate capacity during school holidays. I'm fairly certain we'll see it go down again for a little while once the holidays are over to complete the refurb with all effects up to scratch, and potentially some additional ones they haven't put in yet due to time crunch.
  12. even if it had 100% uptake - you can't have the entire train running VR because the front row doesn't get it - something about start up calibration i think - theres a QR code or something that the headset needs to see in order to know positioning etc, isn't there?
  13. I meant that in the sense of "they won't be seeing me until they spend some big dollars on something to pull me back" rather than 'the park is going to fold because they didn't build what I wanted them to"... That said people have been predicting Dreamworld's demise for years. I probably have once or twice, but that was definitely not my intention here. I just feel like they're treading water. They have a huge international exposure grade event happening on their doorstep and so far they've shown no intention to capitalise on it by building... either there is no money left in the piggy bank, which in an of itself is concerning. The Australian Financial Review recently referred to Dreamworld within the Ardent portfolio as (quote) "A decrepit basket case". The fact that Ardent lost about 30% of it's share value on appointing Deborah Thomas was pointed at as the sole cause of this loss... where she was criticised because she 'doesn't even know how to operate a roller coaster' - her response was that she doesn't need to know how to operate it, just how to get people to pay money to want to ride it. I love the improvements the park has made, but a shiny new store won't bring people through the door. BIG RIDES do that. Without it - they will continue to lose market share, and the fact that the Main Event centres are prospering whilst the theme parks languish is what points me to believe that Ardent is trying to offload it. Who they sell it to will be the big deciding factor in what happens to the parks future, and if indeed it survives and flourishes, or fades quietly into obscurity, like Wonderland before it.
  14. I'm sure they can handle that request. I can't say you'll like the response, but the request would definitely be handled...
  15. We tend to abbreviate a lot on these boards. for a newcomer, the abbreviations tend to be the number one reason for them to post (ie: what's SBNO mean? What's an LSM?). Many of these can now be successfully googled, but many of our park specific ones (HWSW vs. HWSD) do get confusing. What's my point? I like abbreviating (mainly because i'm lazy) - and for me GP is a far easier abbreviation than NE. GP is a commonly accepted acronym for the term 'general public' whereas i'm more likely directing people North East than referring to non enthusiast. Again, I note that while we all (when entering through the front gate) are considered GP by the parks, I use the term to denote the public 'in general', rather than enthusiasts less generally. I don't consider use of GP to be looking down on general park goers, and I acknowledge that we, as enthusiasts also fit into that group - but for discussion purposes are separated by using 'enthusiast'. If someone can come up with an acronym to refer to "us" enthusiasts (maybe TPG or TPN would work - being theme park geek or theme park nerd - but I note in my unofficial Parkz acronym dictionary that these are already in use for TP Girl and TP Ninja... Plus someone might find them derogatory... Oh well... back to the drawing board.
  16. Who are you speaking to? You must be talented to hold a conversation with someone whilst you type on your phone! thanks for the info.
  17. Agree with @djrappa, except sometimes one does need to differentiate between us as enthusiasts \ fanatics \ more knowledgeable park goers - ie: people who would refer to coasters by their manufacturer or model, as opposed to people who go - hey look - a roller coaster! For me, I prefer GP, or general public, vs. Enthusiast. Whilst I realise that enthusiasts are still 'general public' as far as the park is concerned, its what I use to differentiate.
  18. I can honestly say I rarely get wet on Rocky Hollow... And it might have a second drop, but Vikings Revenge has a Castle, and interesting stuff to look at throughout the ride... I mean you get to go under another roller coaster! We've discussed here ad nauseum about what each park has, does, and is about to do. The problem here is that regardless of how many flat rides Dreamworld installs, they will still be regarded poorly against ANY competitor who opens a roller coaster - regardless of how many flats were installed and how many rides weren't installed by either of them. We all know a coaster brings all the boys to the yard. It may not be what everyone wants, but go onto any park facebook page and ask the question of their followers and the majority will ask for a new coaster every. single. time. By not doing so, Dreamworld has chosen to play second fiddle. Whatever their reasons - whether it be because they're trying to refurbish other attractions (MW has done so whilst still almost concurrently building two new ones), reinvigorate the parks shops and facades (shit, MW has done that too - still while building two new rides back to back), or just holding out on spending more capital when you seriously just want someone else to buy the park from you so you can focus on your arcade business in another country because it delivers quicker returns for the investors (...THAT definitely does not sound like the strategy of a company operated by a bank...yeah got nothin here /sarcasm) What efforts they have done in the past few years are now about to be obliterated by a left-right hook combination delivered by the twin forces of Intamin and Mack. So long Dreamworld...
  19. Do try to think about things a little more mate. You have a 910m coaster track, and you think cutting 12% of the track out will take 'a couple million' off the cost of a 15-20 million dollar ride? It doesn't work that way. If you work on a straight percentage, yeah you might get 2.4 million off - but the track \ steel work is the cheap part. Take 110 metres off a coaster that is already designed and you have to spend money on reengineering and redesigning to ensure the new track is still within the limits required. You're saving on some steel, but at a cost of R&D potentially outweighing that saving. Plus (and I should have mentioned this last night) - constructing these things in Australia costs a shitload more. Firstly because of shipping, and secondly because of our labour laws and our WH&S laws. As @Mark Shaw has said the quoted cost of a ride may be the cost to purchase the ride, or it may be the cost of ride plus construction and theming costs. These figures are quoted indiscriminately by some in the industry depending on who is making the statement, so you also want to make sure the prices quoted are in the same vein.
  20. Wouldn't even need to be an upcharge - could be a completely standalone attraction sold by the studios themselves without need for MW entry. (Might make it more desirable to tourists who would like to do it, but don't want to waste part of their 'day' booked at the park. Wouldn't take much for a couple of sets. I am aware that the sets used for PotC filming here a year or two back is now being used by the GC Renaissance Fair in a little over a week - so the sets wouldn't be hard to keep around - wouldn't even have to be a VRL film really - it wouldn't be about VRL productions, it would be about productions shot at VRS
