Wet N Wild Pacific Cultural Weekends
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to Brad2912's topic in Theme Park Discussion
See, THIS is the sort of thing I imagine for Carnivale. Turn this into a night event (whether it be at WnW or otherwise) to add to the roster. Run THIS in summer and have carnivale at another time - there are plenty of pacific islanders in SE QLD for this to have appeal, and plenty of cultural depth to explore... -

I would suggest few punters coming into Movie World would associate the ride with another similarly constructed ride also called the flash somewhere in china, when they'd more than likely associate it with the DC Flash, TV show, and the soon to be released 2018 Ezra Miller film, which is quite the marketing tie-in. -

It doesn't take much to check IMDB. I disagree - whilst it's great to have a 'villain's precinct' the majority of large scale attractions tend to be the 'hero' in the story. Take SFMM - whilst they do have Riddler's Revenge (villain) they've got Batman, Green Lantern, Road Runner, Speedy Gonzales, Superman - all of which are the 'hero' of their individual stories. You can stretch Apocalypse's former theme of terminator - but you could say it goes either way with that one. In the non-coaster category, they've got many 'hero' rides in the cartoon \ looney tunes areas. They're also constructing 'justice league - battle for metropolis' shooter - which looks similar to our JL3d again putting it in 'hero' territory, but you do have Lex Luthor's drop of doom (villain), and Wonder Woman's Lasso of truth (hero again). I know SFMM is but one example, but with its size, gives you a good indication of where themes go when you have a plethora of rides to put them - and 'equal opportunity' for the villains just isn't really there... -

Lethal Weapon premiered in 1987. They released Lethal Weapon 4 in 1998. Now think for a minute - the last film was released ALMOST 20 YEARS AGO. It is today lacking in relevance. The retheme occurred in 2011 - pegging it at 13 years before expiry. Just like Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow (1994) saw the demise of Police Academy Stunt Show in 2008 (14 years before expiry) ...and Gremlins 2 - The New Batch (1990) saw the demise of the Great Gremlins Adventure in 2001 (11 years before expiry) Arkham Asylum continues to have relevance through repeated references in Batman films, games, and comics. I'm sure that, should it stagnate without meaningful inclusion in film, TV and gaming, and lose relevance for over a decade, i'm sure we'd see it replaced too (although by then the ride will have gotten on in years and possibly need replacing too...) mmmmkay, why do you suppose that is? Perhaps, because the themes are popular? recognisable? are likely to last the test of time meaning they aren't just a flavour of the month to need replacing in a year or two? Please - give an example of a theme outside of the DC universe, that the park would likely and possibly be able to use (so don't say Harry Potter or Disney or some other impossibility) that could realistically still be around in 10 years time and have relevance??? Sorry - thanks for the pickup. i've edited the post to correct the mixup - what i meant was YELLOW track and red train and supports - my reference to Cyclone \ HWSW track (being yellow) should have indicated this, but the fault is my own. Cheers. -

I am realistic enough to say that Flash is the most likely theme for this ride. However - red track and yellow supports to me don't differentiate too much from Superman. RED supports, YELLOW track and RED train strike me as 'different' enough from Superman to be satisfactory, although I dislike the colour scheme (and too many members of GP would view it as 'looks like cyclone \ HWSW' I'd be hoping for something very different to what currently sits on the skyline. TBH i'd prefer if they didn't theme to Flash, but that is based on the assumption that this ride is a lift hill - as I wouldn't associate a lift hill with Flash for obvious reasons.. but i'm also realistic enough that it would be somewhere within the DC universe. The park might be predominantly DC attractions lately, but that's where the popularity is, and what their license permits without costing oodles more and starting negotiations from scratch for every new ride theme they do. I'm more of a fan of this version: -

Skull used to be on the opposite side leading towards the current dreamworks area. if you consider the queue, and the first section is white fridge walls, and the second is toxic underground tunnel - the entrance (and skull) used to be where the toxic underground tunnel started. Thanks for the update on the capping Skeet. My first thought went to risk of impalement with the rebar caps off, and that they'd only want to remove the caps for each footing as each support was installed - so that clears a few things up for me - you are right that it may be indicative of impending construction, but if it's just a case of 'cleanup the concrete on the rebar because we literally have nothing else to do' then it might not be any indication at all. How is the fence going? Is the permanent fence all up? -

I realise it isn't colour accurate, but all the wash marks down the side from incessant chlorination make it look old and worn. i'd have liked to have seen the panels touched just to make them look bright and shiny, without chlorination streaks. I don't care if the colours aren't life-real. -

I mean seriously - the site is about sharing what you can. If you know something but can't reveal it fine, but there is no reason why a publicly accessible information source should have been kept under wraps just so you could lord it over people. Thanks for the contribution @Gazza, it's nice to share.- 10 replies

They could have taken a minute or two to airbrush the slide and have it looking it's best, don't you think? -
You advertise something you want to increase interest and ultimately sales in, driving more traffic to your product. You probably don't need to bring more traffic to a park that is already in 'peak' period, plus it lets you 'soft launch' with people just passing by who are on their yearly holiday with the kids and are looking to spend some disposable income. Now that the crowds are gone, let's tell all the locals who avoid the park like the plague during peak so that they come back and patronise it during our off season. Makes sense to me?

Fright Nights 2017 Wishful Thinking/Speculation
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to omega237's topic in Theme Park Discussion
You can keep your winks. The page I looked at this morning showed three levels of membership - $10, $12 and $15. The $10 membership did not include night event tickets. all were per month pricing, which is where I take the 'extra' $2 from over the 'standard' membership price. I made no such comparison to VIP tickets, so the $24 still stands. When I went back to find that page this afternoon, I couldn't - and it appears as though Village now only offer the premier and elite packages - which is fine. *Found it - there used to be a $10 option that didn't come with night events: And it was still being promoted as recently as november 2016: But it poses a new question - Why don't they offer a membership, with monthly payments, that don't come with night tickets included in the price? Surely there are some people out there that go to these night events 'because it was "free" ? How many headaches is this adding to the capacity problems at fright nights from all these membership tickets? As for the 'initial fee' for sign up - you also pay a payment processing fee when you buy VIP online too. It seems as though they might have changed their ticketing offering today as VIP doesn't seem to be an option at all now (although they do have a $109.99 "mega pass" which is basically the same thing) - the website does seem to be pushing everyone towards membership now, and given the $10 membership is not available, everyone who buys a membership will now have "free" (included) night event tickets. I'm not discussing Carnivale here though. Sure it makes sense to get 'bums on seats' on an event that is less than popular - so include it - but fright nights is clearly capable of standing on it's own - it doesn't need the ticket to be included - at less than a quarter of the gate price - to get people in the door to buy the hotdog and popcorn. I'm not saying DON'T do it - i'm saying offer a higher tier where it's available and charge more for it - they started with that, then obviously nixxed the lowest tier, and now people don't have an option but to pay the higher price, whether they want the event tickets or not. They've also painted themselves into a corner - because now, they HAVE to provide a carnivale event. It is advertised as an inclusion in the membership. If I were to buy membership today, they would have to provide me with a carnivale ticket - or they would breach the contract I have with them. (I haven't read the fine print, and i'm sure there's a way out of it, but it would be an unpopular decision, and most people would just chuck a tantrum on social media without reading the fine print) -

Fright Nights 2017 Wishful Thinking/Speculation
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to omega237's topic in Theme Park Discussion
I've ignored nothing, and thanks for the ENTIRE POST QUOTE when what you were replying to was directly above it. What i sought to do was simplify things - to show how more nights wouldn't increase costs due to higher pricing structures. I considered involving in park spend but without pricing and margins, it's not as easy to explain - however, since you mention it... I know many people who visit fright nights for example on multiple nights. The park actually does sell a season pass as well, so we know there is a market for it. Referring back to my previous points about people only getting to do 'a few' attractions on a night would also result in many people making multiple visits to the event in order to 'do everything'. Now, whilst it's possible a single night visitor might buy a meal, or try a special food item, perhaps buy some flashy crap, or pick up a T-shirt, those repeat visitors aren't going to buy a t-shirt for every night they're there. Furthermore, the season pass holders know that the merchandise gets cheaper towards the end, as the park tries to flog the merch off and not be stuck with it after the event has ended, so they hold onto their cash until the park drops it's margin - if in fact they buy anything at all. So, by making it easier for people to 'do everything' in a single night, the 'season pass' is more for the diehards who want to redo the mazes repeatedly. analyse every detail. spend all night doing nothing but taking photos. People would be less likely to do multiple nights (where a per cap spend for that group will always be less) which would see an increase in the percap for those who only go on one night. For those who do it regularly, the plan is usually: eat before you come, so you don't spend time waiting in line for food avoid the rides, so you can get the mazes and precincts covered If you do it as a once off, and you were able to get through all the mazes and precincts, see the shows, and still have time to sit, have a bite to eat, browse the shops... wouldn't you think there'd be a higher chance of increasing the in park spend per guest? -

Yes, the footings within the circle. (the other stuff i've drawn was meant to be a side layout showing what i meant by triple footings - ie: one under, and one on each side). I'm not saying it would be a loop (the 'double' footings (left side) are arranged in a curve, but the 'triple' combo just seemed like bracing supports to both sides, implying high force, and I suggested an inversion \ loop - i'm completely ok with an overbank turn, and the curved footing placement supports that too. -

If they are to redevelop Gold Rush, it might be worth keeping that in mind as an idea - by all means new attractions and experiences, but it would be a good addition to the ride lineup with minimal cost to install, and perhaps this time could be themed a little better than they are currently. -

Look, don't get me wrong about the memberships - I think it's great they finally started offering tiered tickets which gave different benefits - but you're paying $2 per month extra - so $24 a year, and for your $24 - you get THREE tickets to night events - Fright Nights, White Christmas, and Carnivale. That's $8 a ticket, compared to $34.95 (minimum) standard pricing (for fright nights at least). That's less than a quarter of the cost. I'm all for memberships getting discounts - it should be a reason for people to upgrade their pass, but surely you could charge a bit more on the pass pricing - people would pay it - even if it were $4 extra a month, at least then the night event tickets would be 50% off, which is still a great saving in anyone's language, and most people wouldn't baulk at an extra $4 ($2 for current premier members) to gain access to those. Additionally, that's only working off the lowest priced ticket, which tends to be earlier in the season - your ticket can be booked for any date, which means you could book the most expensive date ($54.95) and at that point the disparity is too large to ignore. I believe that they should cap attendance at a lower figure, and offer more nights, but at a higher price. They're clearly popular - as you can see above premier members only pay $2 a month extra. even if it were $4 or $5 extra, most people would still see it as a bargain deal, but you've just added another $24-$36 into your "events kitty" per membership. $34.95 tickets - bump them up to $39.95. Make a little extra on EACH ticket and you cover the costs of reducing your cap. Assume capacity is limited to 5000. To simplify things, say we have a base ticket of $30 to allow for members paying less and ignoring some of the higher priced nights. That's $150,000 in sales to run a capacity night... Now drop your cap to 4000. To have the same dollar figure in sales (therefore not losing any money out of the deal) you only need to make an additional $7.50 per ticket. Do that for 4 nights, and the extra capacity you lost is now another night's worth of 4000 people, which - if they're all paying $37.50 - is another $150,000 in sales to cover the costs of that night. So i'm not advocating they reduce numbers, but keep tickets the same - i'm suggesting increase price, reduce capacity, so it still evens out - you still make the same profit 'per night' but you have 'more nights'? Clearly, with almost every night being a sell out last year, it makes sense to have more nights, its clearly popular... and with a lowered capacity per night, people who go will get to enjoy more of what is on offer, and leave with a better experience. CBF trawling through MW's FB page, but i'd wager they would have had many complaints from people dissatisfied with only getting through a few of the attractions on offer. -

INB4 anyone asks - no, Nearmap is not updated beyond September. So these footers are new (obviously) and it occurs to me that the "triple" placement suggests an inversion or loop of some description at this point (which will make for a great view on the highway as well as great photos from the footpath) -

i don't really think thats fair Brad - we've all commented on how crowd management seems to be getting worse, as they seem to allow more and more people through. I think a lot of that is contributed to by the 'free' or 'included' tickets with annual passes, and they haven't really helped their situation - I honestly do agree they need to cap numbers on these events a little, and run more nights - we all know that if you don't buy fast track, you're maybe only going to get a couple mazes, and maybe a ride in. If you can't get through MOST of what's on offer within the night, then it's not good value. I'd personally advocate for: a cap on numbers more nights during the season a higher cost for tickets \ annual passes with tickets included to compensate for the above. -

Parkz News Are Australian theme park rides safe?
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to Parkz News's topic in Theme Park Discussion
^^to the point that enthusiasts actually pray for (and actively do things to cause) 'non regular operation' to experience something different: Loading up your car with big blokes on Space Mountain so you're overweight and get redirected. Aiming for the first ride of the day on Superman so you can get a rollback etc I think social media plays a large part in this though. Back in my days at Wonderland - it was rare that anything made the evening news - I think even when the Demon snapped it's cable, nothing made the nightly news, and few people who weren't at the park knew about it at all. There was probably an article in a local rag a few days later as news got out, but nobody thought it was unsafe, and once it was repaired (which took a while!) everyone was back on it. These days, it'd have been on facebook media sites within minutes, with live streams from guests in the park. I know i'm just saying what we all know already - but social media is the day we live in - the parks need to have good social media management and they need to actively reply to posts or articles with tangible evidence that disproves the 'chicken littles' out there - the suggested 'educational videos' would be great to add in reply for 99% of incidents. For the 1% that aren't normal (GL wheel assembly, Smiler, TRRR) it wouldn't be that easy, but for the rest it would. -

#bringbackthesarcasmtag At most, it's 5 months. The park is a seasonal park. I cbf going back to check when it closed last year, but i'm pretty sure it was a similar period. To contribute to the off-topic fright nights discussion - I know they built sheds, and I believe that was because Thor had booked out the studios (CMIIW) - but is there anything booked in the studios this year that would prevent them from utilising SS1&2? -
Parkz News Are Australian theme park rides safe?
DaptoFunlandGuy replied to Parkz News's topic in Theme Park Discussion
An excellent article that should get some traction on social media and hopefully spread the word that the media are dicks. I would have liked to see it answer some possible questions though: explaining The Smiler incident, and why the block system worked (since the article talks about two trains not occupying the same block) explaining the green lantern wheel assembly incident, and other similar issues surrounding engineering, and the response to such. but that's just me being pedantic.
