The New Atlantis - Construction Updates

Doesn't look too bad, we where never going to get anything amazing. A few subtle 'middle finger style' references to WipeOut there too. Thanks for the pics @themagician -
So more a 'look at us jumping on the bandwagon (with our long term planned upgrade)' than a direct response to the current climate.

I'd imagine that rides that have sat dormant likely require a fair bit of inspection, as well as staff refresher training. Especially post TRRR, there will be lots of boxes to tick.

@RossL thanks for the clear up, I'd read an early article on this.

WHO have also said that asymptomatic people don't seem to spread the virus very easily.

But at this point, no one has recently, to my knowledge, tested positive within Queensland with no known source of transmission (ie community transmission). They've said that we need to go through several incubation cycles (multiples of two weeks) before they can consider opening up, we must be at that point in Queensland by now.

As a thread hijack, if you haven't seen how most of "The Mandalorian" was filmed, check out the docos and webpages on "The Volume". Impressive shit, real time CGI backgrounds that adapt to the camera position. -
That's a really great idea.

When the next section of the Metro opens, will they require that many trains for the line anyway? The moves to get those trains into service must be very inefficient as well.

I think the whole comment about threatening to be sued was done as a joke. But it seems like it could happen, which has caused the conflict.

Remember with JobKeeper, business are only eligible once they have a 30% decrease year on year. Once things pick up, they will loose eligibility for JobKeeper (unless they fudge their books). I saw today, they are concerned about 'zombie' companies, ones that are dead but exist only to claim the subsidy. I suspect that some are keeping the old company alive on JobKeeper whilst starting another business doing the exact same thing and turning a profit (or at least that is the government's concern).

They take your word for it, like they have been in public. A mate was stopped in town, asking what he was doing. Answered grabbed a coffee, heading back to the office. Off he went to the office. Should have been a bit clearer on the register, I meant at the gate, not at the rides. The risk is really low, and should be lower again by July. I will be interested to see how they handle it, as we'll need to apply some procedures for a similar situation.

You don't have to socially distance yourself from your own family members. So you can get more than one person per car. Restaurants are having to take a guest list, so I'd expect that to be part of the process, so if someone is sick, they can identify everyone that was there that day.

Now is also a perfect time to fix up all the little things that may not cost much, but take time and haven't been a priority due to the 7 day a week nature of the business.
-
And ultimately they don't want every ride needing annual maintenance all at the same time next year, because they did them all at once this year.

https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/sales-delivery/non-delivery-of-products-services#failure-to-supply-a-product-or-service Suggests that they shouldn't be taking the money. Gyms are in the same boat right now. Our kids swim school tried this trick over Christmas "we'll take your money, and give you make up lessons for the lessons that aren't operating over Christmas". One of the mum's researched, rang them up, next week we all got forms to apply for the hold to be made.

Genuinely serious questions. How many Steam Locomotive Boiler qualified inspectors do you know of active in Qld? How many Steam Boiler qualified inspectors do you know of, active in Qld? My understanding is that the boilers say in a hospital (if there are any left), are under different rules to locomotives. -

QR had a boiler inspector, he sadly passed away last year. Right now, QR heritage is being left to rot. There have been no "Steam Train Sunday's" this year, and likely not to be. The only steam trips have been AHRS Qld hires of QR's trains. QR only has one operational loco at Ipswich, to my knowledge. The C16 is still at Gympie, the AC16 Yank is in need of repair. BB18 1/4 1089 is operational, BB18 1/4 1079 might be (unsure). The Blue Baby DD17 project has been stopped, even though it was almost finished being restored, with a new welded boiler. -

There are two people in Queensland. The one Dreamworld has used before, and another. There are three steps to certify after a major rebuild. Pressure test with cold water. Smoke leak test with a fire in the firebox, but no water in the boiler. Hot pressure test with water in the boiler and a fire in the firebox. You are looking at around $5k per step to sign off. So $15k. Keep in mind, a steam boiler is a vessel containing water under extreme pressure and heat. So no cutting corners. The green QR Loco's (BB18 1/4) operate at 170 psi, so the boiling point of the water inside is 187 degrees celcius. The water would be hotter than that, to generate the steam required. The ex Dreamworld Perry should be back on track, hopefully later this year or early next year. The Baldwin's condition varies depending on who you ask. -
The above (I think) also requires a grouper, and two staff on loading. As well as someone in the control room. Was there much of a crowd? What can happen is they forecast a crowd, but they don't get one. To remove the second train takes too long, so they just persist with the two trains, slowly. One day when I was there, Superman was running two trains, and the staff where on the ball. The train heading off to launch was having to slow and wait for the winch to be ready at the "it's superman" stage.
