Arkham Asylum - VR coaster at Movie World
Slick replied to UpperCoomera's topic in Theme Park Discussion
Next time I'll be sure to recommend the park to spend ten times the budget to satiate something so ridiculously minor that no one but you will ever think of. Seriously, in pretend make belief world, of which this exists in, the tv's could just be a live feed that the nurse takes over. So far, I've squashed two of your over-analytical brain dumps with two very simple rationales. Time to drop it mate. Ill say this again, we're so lucky that parks go to the effort to bother try and do new things, especially when the reception from their loyal fans is nothing but criticism. And to put any doubts at rest, I'm not Robb Alvey, I don't give a crap who likes or doesn't like me or my work, frankly, putting yourself out there in the world requires having a thick skin. I have no time for animosity or holding grudges. What's actually giving me the shits is this attitude folks here on the forums have cultivated lately. Chillout, have a beer, remember this isn't Disney, and keep in mind that when you're just negative for the sake or being negative without offering anything of merit to justify a critical opinion, you're bumming everyone else out about theme parks, a place about fun and happiness. TLDR: Stop it. Theme parks are about fun. Quit nitpicking and appreciate you're not starving in a third world country. -

Arkham Asylum - VR coaster at Movie World
Slick replied to UpperCoomera's topic in Theme Park Discussion
The TVs could just be on a loop and have been on auto-play since the inmates caused havoc. This is the second thread tonight that's made me realise why we as a community can't have nice things. Folks want to pick apart the dumbest things that are the very thing that the parks giggle at us about. Theme parks are about fun and happiness. If you're over-analysing queue line videos for the purposes of bitching without offering anything positive or constructive, or you're nitpicking something as awesome as backward seating on a roller-coaster ( a roller-coaster, might I add, that's so big, it's the very thing we collectively have wanted since these forums started) and you're only whinging because you're worried about waiting for too long, maybe theme parks and having fun isn't for you. -
Backwards row - DC Rivals HyperCoaster
Slick replied to New display name's topic in Theme Park Discussion
This reminds of when VR got added to Arkham Asylum. Folks went into an over-analytical nose-dive about how this would be the end of Arkham Asylum's capacity. Here's a shocker though (pun intended), it really didn't change, the world kept spinning, everyone here loves VR and now six months later we're finding a new thing to whinge about. Honestly, how this is a thing is beyond me. For those who just can't shake the thought of backwards seats, here's a two step guide on how to deal with it. Dealing with backwards seating: A Guide Step 1) Ignore it and go about your day. Step 2) If you're still worried about it and the fact that it may make your wait-time longer, set your alarm earlier and get to Movie World before everyone else. -
To be fair I think anything this week was drowned out by Rivals.

Must... Avoid... Feeding... Trolls... I'll avoid going all Robb Alvey on you @wikiverse, but I think you're taking the subtext of "they're in an insane asylum and thus all boring shells of a person" and just adding your own to fit your agenda. Have a beer, enjoy VR, watch the video, CTFO. -

Will DC Rivals Hypercoaster further erode Dreamworld's attendance?
Slick replied to SHOOKETH's topic in Theme Park Discussion
I really don't mind them, and you're exactly right. Takabisha is too long, imo. Shorten it, make it faster than 115k/ph, and give it more inversions than Arkham Asylum and you're set. -
Will DC Rivals Hypercoaster further erode Dreamworld's attendance?
Slick replied to SHOOKETH's topic in Theme Park Discussion
Hey, just totally curious, and look, totally cool if you did, it happens, we're all human, but.... Did you forget that Disneyland's mascot hasn't been in a feature film in nearly 2 decades? I'm just curious because it makes your whole argument about nostalgia kind of bunk, that's all. And you know Dreamworld works closely with Dreamworks, right? I'm not 100%, but they've also had big blockbusters around the same time as Pirates, Star Wars, Pixar etc etc the list goes on and on, as you say. And we won't worry about Dreamworld's connections with ABC Kids World, The Wiggles etc. as you say, Dreamworld has nothing to fall back on. We done here? Can we get back on topic? TLDR: Nostalgia & Innovative ideas are key. -
Will DC Rivals Hypercoaster further erode Dreamworld's attendance?
Slick replied to SHOOKETH's topic in Theme Park Discussion
Haha cheers @Tim Dasco - like I said yesterday, I was working on to something about this topic. I'll save some of you the jump and re-hash the main points: One of Dreamworld's biggest strengths is the nostalgia and the culture that's wrapped around it. Dreamworld isn't a theme park, it's an iconic Australian powerhouse, one that people are far more loyal to compared to Movie World. You only have to look at the last seven months to see that loyalty in action. The recipe then is simple, give people what they want, give them a chance to relive nostalgia and good memories, and do it well. Now, before you go down the "oh but no one cares about X&Y thing at Dreamworld anymore" route, spare me, because the world's largest operator of theme parks has rides from the 50's people still give a crap about. I'm talking about Disney of course, and their guest's loyalty stems from the fact that Disney is relentless in ensuring they can do everything to better their attractions and ensure every facet of the experience is unforgettable. Who doesn't remember the Bush Ranger show? Bring it back. Remember the smell of the steam train? Bring it back. Remember the quartet? Bring it back. Log Ride, Mine Ride, Model T Ford Cars, bring it back, and do it well. But also don't stop there, make sure every facet of your park is being done well. I walk through the Tower of Terror & Giant Drop queue lines and wonder if anyone's paying attention. They're so horrible that I think a walk down a dreary hospital corridor would at least be cleaner and more maintained. No one's asking you to be Disney, but they are asking you to look after what you have and keep at it, every single day. You could knock the wind out of Movie World's sails tomorrow with two rides and half the money. Here's how. Hypercoasters are incredible, but almost all of them, including DC Rivals, lack one thing, inversions. Dreamworld could easily build what's known as a Gerstlauer Eurofighter (like Abyss at Adventure World) for a fraction of the cost, build it with seven elements that go upside down, and there you have it; Movie World might have the tallest and fastest, but if Dreamworld built an inverting, launched Eurofighter, they could have the country's fastest ride that goes upside down more then anything else in Australia. And if you theme it well, you might just be able to put enough pressure on the HyperCoaster to hold it at bay. The second ride you'd build is a Soarin' style attraction. Disney pioneered it, they're popping up all over the world thanks to companies like Brogent Technologies, and Dreamworld is perfectly positioned to build one for the cheap. How? Well, Dreamworld once upon a time had an IMAX theatre with near vertical seating, and as a result, have more than enough clearance to nearly literally just "plonk" a soarin' style ride system right into the existing structure with minimal fuss. Given that most folk's biggest wish list is for Movie World to return the Police Academy and the Mavericks show, a Soarin' ride would deliver a show quality experience, at high capacity, and mix it in with something the country's never seen before. And this is by no means an original idea, it was hotly rumoured that Movie World were considering a similar move around a decade ago, but opted out due to costs, something that has changed considerably. Will DC Rivals Hypercoaster further erode Dreamworld's attendance?
Slick replied to SHOOKETH's topic in Theme Park Discussion
In terms of thrill ride offerings, until Rivals opens, Dreamworld has Movie World totally licked. There's just so many different flat rides, some of them iconic legends (Wipeout) that to say Movie World's lineup of thrill ride attractions comes close is hyperbole. It's not a poor offering by any stretch of the imagination, and even when Rivals opens, it won't be poor, it'll be at best out of date. Talking specifically about roller-coasters though, Movie World's had Dreamworld licked for years. Sidewinder is a second hand, out of date 90's coaster with the smallest inversions on any major coaster in the world, Buzzsaw is a one trick pony, Tower of Terror, one trick pony, and the rest are either universally panned as awful, they're closed or a kid's coaster. Movie World has a world class launch coaster, world class wild mouse coaster (until they stripped it and said nothing since about it), an interesting albeit gimmicky El Loco coaster, a stock standard inverted coaster but with a unique helix and world class VR setup and a kids coaster. TLDR, almost every major coaster Movie World has brings something world class or unique to the table. Dreamworld's coasters are just not up to the national standard anymore, let alone the international standard. -

Just adding a quick recap: Richard's closer look article is up on Parkz My in-depth article is now live on OurWorlds For those who don't like clicking or tapping, here's a quick photo dump from my end ( @Richard was ever so lucky to go on-site, meanwhile I snooped off-site with my telephoto lens.) -
Weren't they doing Green Lantern walks though when Arkham was down last year? Here I was thinking a year ago that they'd never get around the OH&S on getting people up and down a lift hill, but a bit of logic and common sense usually gets around these things. If they really want to slam Star Tours sales, they'd be doing either walks or early morning runs on Rivals, just saying, so yeah, never say never.

Is this the third or fourth time the date's slipped now for Tower of Terror? Hope that behemoth is okay. :/

Will DC Rivals Hypercoaster further erode Dreamworld's attendance?
Slick replied to SHOOKETH's topic in Theme Park Discussion
I'm writing something in this very vein (which you'll see up tomorrow) and my thesis is essentially that being a successful park requires major capex on big, thrilling attractions. Nothing garners more hits, more viewers, more eyeballs and ultimately more tickets purchased than something like a big ride. I know from my own stats on YouTube and on the site (and i'm sure @Richard will agree too) that in particular, roller-coasters garner a nearly ten-fold increase in hits versus any other attraction. Now, i'm not saying go crazy and build nothing but roller-coasters, because at the core of what makes Dreamworld so unique is the foundation of experiences that wrap around the property - so much so that the ability to have a little slice of everything in the space of a day over say going to many parks over many days is what will continue to keep Dreamworld open. But, also, if I had to be blunt, Ardent need to stop counting the pennies (something they've done since it was still MLT) and give Dreamworld's CEO the kind of money the place needs to fight a HyperCoaster. And that's not to say you need to fight dollar for dollar, you can be crafty and innovative and steal a huge chunk of the HyperCoaster thunder without spending the same amount, but for it to be effective they need to move, and move quick. -
Patience. Don't flap like a dill. Pretend you're skiing (so throw your arse into one side of the seat as if you're counterbalancing) and flap one side up and one side down, then throw your arse the other side and bank the flaps the other way. Keep repeating and the sway will get bigger and bigger until you invert, and then you just hold. Yeah also another good point, go out the outer left seats. More lateral force = easier to pull off.

In the spirit of Thrillathon, I threw this video up of onboard Tailspin at night. For anyone who says it's not a thrill ride, watch this:
