Whats also amazing is that the system didn't even log the stop button pushes... like it clearly was a piece of shit being held together bby chewing gum from the 80s -

Thing is something can pass (unless of course it's a Dreamworld safety audio 😛 ) and be bare minimum. Should we running things at bare minimum safety levels to save some dollars when standard industry practices are available at a much higher level? No way! It's very very clear here there were major KNOWN shortcomings in the design, modifications and control systems of that ride, and that even the high level staff seem to have confusion over what did what. That's not ok. The current employees are 100% on the Kool-Aid and have been coached that is clear. You simply CANNOT blame the 2 ride operators in any way for the simple fact that ride operators (no matter how senior as they are still low level front line employees) should never be put into a situation to make literal life or death decisions. The systems should be in place to take those decisions off them. They weren't. They modified the ride to remove the turntable - first thing that allowed the accident to happen They failed to put adequate steps in place to upgrade to a block type system - 2nd thing that allowed the accident to happen They added rails to stabilise the rafts if water dropped - 3rd thing They removed slats to grip the rafts better - 4th thing They removed an 'annoying' alarm - 5th thing They ignored recommendations to upgrade the controls - 6th thing etc etc etc Many of these things were band aid fixes to solve one problem whilst creating another. ANYONE who wants to defend the actions of Dreamworld management in light of all of these things simply is not bing objective I'm sorry. -

That ride was a ticking time bomb. It doesn't even take someone educated in control systems, human machine interfaces or ergonomics to see how fatally flawed that cluster f&ck of a control system was! -

Yeah I vote for clog the shit out of this thread with info. More the merrier. I cant believe there is still the vibe of defending Dreamworld on here. They have literally done everything not to do, much all tied back go saving a buck. Gaol is where much of the management should be, which is still a lot better than Dead! Which let's not forget us where 4 innocent people are because this park cut corners, went against industry practices and tried to save money as a priority over YOUR safety! -

It's all a moot point. They shouldn't have had to run to a button because appropriate automated controls should have been in place to stop the conveyor. -

You can't blame John. The ride opened with a continuous load system where this wasn't possible. Soneobe changed it to braked unload and load and failed to adequately alter the control system to compensate. After the 2001 incident further changes should have been made. They weren't. Ignorance is not a defense. Someone was responsible for ride control systems oversight at Dreamworld, they failed in their duty. With the processes in place this could never have occurred at a VRTP property -

Here's my commentary: -Training was grosely inadequate and symptomatic of the theme park industry only equipping operators with the bare min knowledge. -Even if it's claimed the ops were told by a trainer abc, if operator did not retain abc the training system is at fault, not the operator -Soemone is 100% at fault here. That person is whoever was responsible for the ultimate management of ride control systems at the park. This one was innadequate and they allowed that to remain the case. They are responsible for 4 deaths and 100% should be in goal. -This should result in an industry shakeup that prohibits reducing staffing levels and adding workloads through assistance like CCTV, etc etc. Rides need more operators. -A 'blackbox' is 100% possible. All rides should run on a modern PLC capable of fault logging. A failed pump is very easy to monitor whether by current draw CTs, motor RPM via a high speed encoder, or flow via a flow meter. None were in place. -

Thanks for the pickup AlexB on my typo. To answer your example. The 'big red button' at outback did stop everything. For the very reason that it's the 'law'. When additional elements were added to that show the 'old' button that continued to only act on the helicopter had to be swapped to a different colour, be renamed, and have a placard attached that stated it acted on the chopper only and was not an EStop. So back to rapids, any components that interact with others must be all considered part of the one 'system' and thus an actual EStop must act on all. If youre super bored then what you want is the Australian Standard for Machine Guarding. That will give you all this info. -

No that's the problem. You can't have an Emergency Stop button attached to a piece of equipment (ie the ride) that doesn't stop all parts of the ride and remove all energy (read that's not just electrical power). Otherwise it isn't an Emergency Stop. A 'conveyor stop' button say black in colour is perfectly legal though and doesn't have to remove power. The whole thing is ridiculous anyway. There should have been both an interlock between the pumps and the conveyor as well as safety logic that stops the conveyor on a station backup like what occurred. The ride had neither. It was a majorly deficient control system. -

Would be good to know what the labels were. Anything labeled Emergency Stop MUST remove all energy from the system, so can't just stop one thing. Similarly if it's a red button on a yellow background regardless of the label (if any) it is implied that this is an Emergency Stop and should function as above. -
Yup, and they really haven't been convincing for a long time due to poor lighting.

For me the ideal campaign for this attraction would be as ambiguous as possible. I would have all sorts of shots of POV experience as well as obscure shots of riders in the flying position, never really revealing what the ride system is exactly. I would want the public questioning whether it was on a track, a simulator, or whatever it is. You know, some whimsy...

It's safe to say Rivals did not have a marketing plan, but rather a "oh crap our ride was called suicide and the park up the road just killed 4 people, crap, crap crap, what do we do?" plan.
-
Yeah they probably are using that photo because they want the park to actually not look like a piece of shit.

'Line Level' park supervisor staff have and always have had a uniform. However management teams do not. To my knowledge that has always been the case and is even the case at somewhere like the Disney Parks. They will always have a name badge though. Anyone directly in contact with guests for 99% of cases is a uniformed member of staff.

So here's the thing... when you are fat, restraints don't work. It's not a matter of making 'more accomodating' restraints, it won't help. Fat is a fluid portion of body mass, it can't be properly held in place, and prevents the restraints working properly. If the restraint is secured on fat, the fat can shift during the ride making the restraint loose, and then you fall out and die. It's simple as that and has happened. So unfortunately yes people do have a ride to be fat and proud of their body, however as long as ride manufacturers also have the right to stop being killed, we don't see coasters modified to fit the obese.

I love the menu. It's exactly what I'd expect to see in an American Top Golf and honestly that's what I want here, not some 'Australian (read shit ass) version of Top Golf.' Pricing seems about spot on for this style of entertainment venue, country, location. As for alcohol and spirit selection, there is certainly a distributor contract in place here from looking at those brands so that's why you do and don't see certain offerings. There will only be something outside what that distributor offers exclusively if they don't make an alternative (ie like JD Fire vs Fireball) or it's a cocktail standard. The let down is probably the wine offering, all of those are to put it mildly, shit wines. I'm surprised there isn't at least one or two offerings of something decent. That The Riddle stuff is the same crap they are pouring for free at the Outback Show next door, so I think they could do a little better here. $150 for a bottle of Moet is about right... even though it's an awful Champagne.

I was not a fan. Rather than 3D mapping the face, its just a flat projection surface over the top of the face, really kind of 'meh' and 'why?'. The fact you actually make it at the Opera House is just beyond stupid also.

Whoever mentioned uniforms is bang on. That Village branding should NEVER have entered the public facing aspect of the parks. Disney tried creating a "Disney Parks" brand an ditching all park specific stuff and it backfired terribly and ultimately reversed it all. Why the GC parks repeat mistakes of other operators years after they were shown to be awful and expect different is baffling... All those "Village" corporate type uniforms are management types getting off on being some of some big corporate entity and completely detrimental to placemaking and magic, just awful. I can't say enough horrid things about those rank uniforms, multi park merch, and '4 park' name badges. What I do hope is all of this left along with Tim Fisher and change is in the works, I hear so many good 'JSM Style' comments about Kirby that we can only hope.

You cant make morale and happiness with money... its not about wages. The village parks used to have as much fun and social recreation behind the scenes as front of house back hen John Menzies ran the place. The staff would have industry deals at venues all over town. There would be catered (with alcohol) after hours parties for staff almost monthly, and un official organised gatherings in town even more frequently. Then there was the famous annual Warner Village ball which saw all staff (1000s) treated to a sit down formal dinner, unlimited drinks and festivities all night, and handing out of employee of the year awards. Many staff lived for this annual party which was renowned for being one of the best on the coast. All these things made the place more than just a workplace. When Tim Fisher came in, all that stopped, there is no such thing a ball or a Christmas Party anymore, any staff function is held on site and is about as exciting as you can imagine from say a Trivia Night with free Soft Drink! WOO With so many companies being all about employee benefits to retain good staff these days, it's safe to say Village are as behind in staff relations as Dreamworld are in strategic direction. It's people that make your business, end of story.

This Scooby shop closed things is pretty damn piss poor. Exit past the closed roller door and out a fire exit hardly aligns with promises we heard of outlets being open longer and always does it...

1) Vegan is bit an allergy 2) That sound like a riveting blog, can I suggest a title of "How to take all the fun out of theme park food" 3) I don't believe for a second having a lactose intolerance for one second makes it hard to eat at the parks. They will happy give out any information related to allergies at either the outlet or guest services.

Here's the thing... this "they gain the gate revenue but lose all that f&b revenue" argument doesn't hold up. Because they people that are relying on the bargain basement pass prices are not spending in park. They are eating at maccas, and at their cars in the car parks. It's also been proven that bigger crowds can reduce f&b sales because people don't want to wait in the long lines. It really is that high ticket price, one or 2 visits, high in park spend customer that the parks need for financial growth.
