  1. They could also use the tagline "Face Gravity - Face First"

  2. Honestly they need to eat the cost, even if it isn't worth it. They need to hire-on some labour hire staff who are dedicated to cleaning and sanitising, especially the ride vehicles. They need to eat the fact that they are not going to be profitable on day one. But, they need to open, even at a loss in the short term, in order to demonstrate that they can be open, that they are taking the appropriate precautions. A few media pieces on the news about the parks reopening showing all the cleaning and sanitising. Get Clark on talking about what they're doing to keep people safe. Give people confidence that they can return safely. If their plan is to be back to normal capacity by September, they need to get the doors open now so that those who are looking for somewhere to holiday in the warmer months know its an option. Although we talk about people planning their next years holidays in advance, a lot of those plans are scuttled - all those who had planned to go overseas may look more locally and put off the overseas trip for another year - so if our domestic markets can reopen, put on a show and prove they can do it safely, it will pay off in the long term... And it's self interest. If the buy out deal we saw recently is correct - they need to have the parks open prior to the share deal to make a premium on the share price - so even if they don't make a profit, reopening the parks is beneficial to shareholders and to village... but they have to do it right, or there is no point.

  3. Village Roadshow boss Clark Kirby met with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk yesterday to make the case for reopening. VILLAGE boss Clark Kirby is aiming to have Sea World and Movie World at full capacity in time for the September school holidays if a soft opening the previous month goes to plan. Mr Kirby met with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk yesterday to make the case for reopening the theme parks, which have been closed since late-March. It follows criticism from Mr Kirby last week over the State Government allowing shopping centres to take in thousands of customers, but limiting theme parks to 20 people from June and 100 from July. “We went through all our COVID-safe plans with her and it got a really good reception,” he said. “There were certainly no promises (from the Premier), but I think she is keen to get the parks open as soon as possible too.” Mr Kirby said Village submitted a detailed COVID-safe proposal to the State Government, involving families being able to go on rides together while spaced apart from other groups, ensuring social distancing was observed. “We are just working through some of the practicalities like social distancing and sanitising,” he said. Mr Kirby said he hoped to have Village parks undertake a soft opening in July for “very small numbers” and then gradually increase the number of customers to reach full capacity by the September school holidays. He said he hoped “in ideal circumstances” to have Movie World and Sea World at half capacity by July – meaning 3000 patrons at Sea World and 7000 at Movie World. Another option being considered is to reopen one park to test the COVID processes first before opening others. Griffith University health and infectious disease expert Professor Nigel McMillian said it was up to each industry to make its best case for reopening to large numbers of customers. “If you look at the NRL and racing and AFL et cetera, they are making their case around their unique circumstances,” Prof McMillian said. “From an infectious disease point of view, what is the difference between a shopping centre and a theme park? Each one will have its unique, particular issues, (but) a ride (where people are) sitting next to each other – that does not happen in a shopping centre.” https://www.goldcoastbulletin.com.au/news/gold-coast/coronavirus-village-roadshow-ceo-clark-kirby-aiming-to-have-sea-world-and-movie-world-at-full-capacity-by-september-holidays/news-story/35389f0cff972d651eff59f6791ab8a0 ————————————————————————— my 2 cents... there is no way in hell, mid-winter, that theme parks will be allowed capacities in the 3000+ mark. Can you even imagine 7000 social distancing in queues? The DCR queue would run the whole way down Main Street, likely intersecting with the queue for SE...

  4. We can say definitely because in order to open it will have to be inspected and certified as having a code compliant control system. So that's the definitive case closed on that one. Yes it will definitely have an E-Stop, not even open for debate unless someone is relocating the park to Mexico.

  5. At USJ they literally just put nets under every part of the flyer, which TBH spoiled the look of the Jurassic Park zone. But I imagine a MW flyer would probably only have a couple of token sections over paths, so you wouldnt need to install as many. https://www.parkz.com.au/photo/23428-Flying_Dinosaur/gallery/sort/newest/location/ride-2541/offset/13

  6. They say those numbers, but I doubt they’ll reach them when it’s only locals visiting them. I think opening SW first as a test (with its less number of rides), show everyone how they will implement everything and if that goes smoothly, then a month later open MW with reduced capacity, and gradually increase the limit as allowed. I can’t see them having full capacity by September, but definitely by December

  10. They should, once they get approval to reopen, and taking into account the fact that they won't be making a profit that first week or two anyway, make the first couple of openings a "Family and Friends" day, just to make sure they've ironed out any kinks, and can find any implementation issues. Because there are always kinks. Then hold a media day with journalists, and maybe local people of influence (bloggers, people from here and other sites like it), who can confirm that the plans are working. That gets them media coverage about doing the right thing without taking anything just on the word of people with vested interests of the park being open, meaning that more people will potentially be willing to come to the park. Hell, make it an invitation to the Dreamworld management as well. It's not like their Covid plan will be a trade secret as everyone's will basically be variations on the same theme, and for this kind of thing the optics of the parks working together for the benefit of the public at large can only be a positive. If they can make it happen, invite management from all the popular parks. That might be harder due to travel constrictions, but it seems reasonable that this could count as necessary business. But there is no way you'd do the media day first, because if something does go wrong, that will set them back weeks, or maybe even months in the view of the public. This applies equally to whichever of the parks is going to be able to be the first one to open. But who knows, maybe the different park management groups are already working together. A rising tide raises all boats, after all.

  11. Regional parks cannot sustain the attendance required to operate a full scale park, especially with the type of attractions Six Flags are known for, and if you are going to do a half-assed version why bother.

  13. You can’t just “move” a film studio. They are multimillion dollar custom built buildings, some with water tanks inside, waterfall features, rigging, climate controls etc. “Moving” would equal demolition and rebuild.

  14. I'm with you on every point bar this one. Our parks aren't six flags or cedar fair. dropping 10s of millions on new attractions every year or so isn't viable long term - especially if the rides are unique or very limited run - like TOT. Being one of only 3 in the world meant there was little demand to keep supporting the ride beyond the current lifetime, which is why Dreamworld closed theirs, and why SFMM raided Coomera for parts. We don't need unique. We need something that will have a lot of support for years to come. The drop tower concept obviously has a lot of industry support, so likely that style of ride will continue - but if the specialised parts associated with a face first drop don't find wider usage elsewhere, Dreamworld may well find themselves in the same situation they are now - having to close several of their flagship attraction (Wipeout, TOT) without a replacement lined up. I'm all for the record breakers, so long as its just a bigger version of a standard ride, so parts, support, maintenance and so on will be around long enough for them to get their return on investment.

  15. Adding onto this point this is where I consider such a conversion to be marketable. Records are eye catching to the public and also to an extent overseas as well with the advent of social media and clickbait videos (see the Stratosphere rides as an example). There's a reason why for nearly 20 years, theme parks around the world were constantly trying to build the biggest, longest and fastest rides, something DW themselves participated in. DC Rivals was built up as the tallest, fastest and longest coaster in the Southern Hemisphere. While those stats mean jack shit for us who are well read on the industry, for the GP that don't know how many roller coasters are south of the equator, it makes it appear a lot bigger and impressive than it really is. So imagine Dreamworld having the world's tallest and fastest face first drop tower, as well as being the only ride of its type in Australia, the Southern Hemisphere, and just 1 of 3 in the entire world. If the conversion is found to be structurally and financially feasible, it honestly seems like a no-brainer to me, and along with a new thrill ride to replace Wipeout, makes Dreamworld's thrill ride collection almost comparable to what's on offer down the road.

  16. Much like the days when every time a ride had an emergency stop (for whatever the reason may be) someone would take a photo and send it to the media. Thankfully those days are long gone
    1 point
  17. The latter was my take on it. similar to how the Trident concept shows fountains coming out of what would be the loading area once the ride is in the air.

  18. The media will be there Day 1 regardless. Every person with a phone is “the media” these days. An hiccups, breaches in social distancing etc will be filmed and shared on social media immediately and picked up by wide-stream media. there is no “practice” days. They have to get it right from Day 1.

  19. I never said it was a bragging right coaster. The question was made about how many full circuit coasters the park has, and I answered the question. Does it really need a water ride just because it’s called ocean parade? I mean, the general feel of the area and it’s attractions do a good enough job of conveying the ocean parade message (sure it’s not perfect but it’s better than Motorcoaster next to a young children’s area). Id personally prefer a different style of ocean parade (more retro beachside amusement park style) but the park has bigger issues than ocean parade.

  20. Because it's a new ride from a major manufacturer who puts them on their other rides, not an in house one with adhoc additions and incomplete drawings. Are you on a contrarian streak these couple of days mate?

  21. Yeah, on some top spins they wet riders, on other ones they are just done like a near miss that syncs with the ride movement.

Your spelling actually has been great which is a welcome change from some of the kids that join. Punctuation, specifically run on sentences is the problem. I've corrected your post for you so you can see whats missing. It's also now 8:20 in the morning so you're 11:30 at night excuse isn't valid.

  28. Aussie World should consider a Larson-style drop tower like the model LPS has installed. I've always though it was the best ride at Luna Park in my opinion - that drop tower is tiny but it is a genuinely terrifying ride experience, even compared to GD which is over two times the height and other tall drop towers I've ridden overseas. Perfect fit for the park in my opinion, as it isnt an oversized frog hopper like the Zamperla offerings, and it probably is within their budget compared to the Intamin and S&S offerings. As for the face down gondola Falcon's Fury tech, a lot of people on these forums (myself included) have suggested Dreamworld look into whether or not the existing Dreamworld Tower can be converted to use the Falcon's Fury-style ride cars. In my opinion, I think this is how we will get such an experience in Australia.

  29. Basically because MW has Batwing, and LPS has Hair Raiser and Adventure World has Inferno, so that's basically all the major parks covered with a drop ride unless LPM gets one. I think Aussie World has one in their masterplan too, but they wouldn't have the budget for an Intamin one.

  30. Yeah, given the question was 'what is the size of the park area' i tried to stick to park boundary. While it's all village (leased) property, you need to draw a line between what is and isn't part of each gate \ attraction. I included parts of the BOH area behind WWF\Showcase mainly because it does get included in the footprint for fright nights, but for most everything else i've stuck with the fenceline. If I have time i'll do another that excludes BOH and just includes guest accessible areas (and ride envelopes), but since half of showstage is blocked to guests and technically back of house..... and half of the superman showbuilding is back of house... and the arkham \ lethal cinema and shop... and the gremlins theatres... and stars cafe.... and LTRR warehouse.... and the thatched shack in WB Kids.... and Intencity... geez.... there's a lot of derelict areas within the park isn't there!!!???

  31. I am also loving after years of "stop throwing everything in Ocean Parade" people are eager to throw shit in Ocean Parade. Sure a water ride would suit there well but there is no law saying all water rides must be within 50m of a water park and one would be better placed elsewhere in the park to spread out groups of people.

  32. Honestly though any hysteria about a new Rapids attraction (when, and if) is easily dispelled. Modern technology means rapids rides don't need to load boats in the trough - all guest loading and unloading can be done on a solid, flat surface out of the water... Obviously the transitions on and off the conveyor are still risk points, but the continuous movement of the conveyor means there is unlikely to ever be a collision. Oh... and they'll probably have an e-stop.

  33. The Rocky Hollow Log Ride was a staple for almost every family trip of mine to Dreamworld. I have fond memories riding it as a young kid, being terrified of that very meagre final plunge. I even remember riding it with members of the family that don't normally partake in other attractions, such as my grandparents. Call it nostalgia but the best replacement is just a flume. It's a staple of a Theme Park experience, with the worlds most well regarded parks all having an installation of some sort. Each and every family member, from the young to the young-at-heart, are all able to enjoy the experience. The most exciting prospect to me is that a flume attraction offers Dreamworld an opportunity to reintroduce well-themed environments and exciting stories to it's guests; Flumes can be quite underwhelming without a keen appreciation for themed entertainment. Is this the most exciting concept? Is it the most flashy? Absolutely not, but I do not believe that it has to be. Not every addition to a park needs to be the brightest, most modern or the most daring. The last thing Dreamworld needs is to be on the "Bleeding Edge"; What they need what is proven to work, what already meets their existing market and what fills the gap in their lineup.

  38. I have noticed mistakes on them before, but never looked at it in detail and wow that’s a lot of mistakes. While they should definitely fix all those mistakes, most of them aren’t that major for general day guests to notice or they won’t majorly effect someone’s day I have always wondered why they show the Giant Drop on Main Street, but listed under Rocky Hollow (which it is actually a part of)

  43. Who or what is Sandy Shores Lagoon? I assume this is an educational presentation at the front of the park where the grass hill is. If that's what it is I actually think it's a really good idea. I hope it's a success and they follow it up with an educational show in the Sea Lion Stadium between the 'comedy' shows. (hell you could even merge it with this one and do a combined Dolphin/Sea Lion educational show. Sea World used to do these types of shows years ago and I don't think it's a bad idea to bring them back, particularly in a climate where Sea World (and Zoos more broadly) are trying to find their role in modern society. I passionately believe that role is to get people interested in animals, and then to educate people about animals to hopefully grow a passion for animals and conservation. The way I see it, Affinity gets them interested, this show educates. As a side note, I hope in this show they are able to get their message out about how they treat the animals, and how they are cared for, because they have a good story to tell and it's such a shame to me that Affinity doesn't really do anything to talk about it. Actually Affinity doesn't do much to talk about the connection between the trainers and the dolphins at all really. It's kind of just a 'Let's try and use this word randomly' kind of show. But yeah good move, I hope it works. EDIT: One more thing; what's with the name? The show is called 'Our World of the Dolphin presentation'. When I read the blurb first time I kind of read it thinking the show was called 'World of the Dolphin' and the rest was just them saying 'come see our 'World of the Dolphin' presentation. But no, the whole title is 'Our World of the Dolphin presentation'. Just such a needlessly awkward title to me.

  45. About as much as you 'take everything totally literal' streak... It's true though - we'd all have sworn blue in the face that a person would be an idiot for suggesting there was no e-stop on TRRR. I think in the aftermath of the incident the discussions here surrounded how they 'must not have pressed it' rather than 'there wasn't one' until more info started to come out. Yes, more likely, a new ride from a major manufacturer will have it - but to say 'definitely' before it's built, without knowing who the manufacturer is, where its come from, what park it goes into - theres a lot of 'ifs' there to confidently say 'it will definitely have it' when for all we know the wiring on SkyVoyager wasn't even up to code when it arrived.

  47. How can you be so sure of that? I'm sure that, prior to TRRR, all of us would have categorically stated that TRRR had a full power disconnect e-stop, and some people would have even claimed to have seen it... So to state 'definitely' is pretty ballsy, after all we've learned of 'behind-the-scenes' theme park maintenance...
