I guess it's also another way for them to bleed $ from people as well because you won't be able to get a photo of anyone coming down without paying for the on-ride photo. How does it not cross their mind to paint the fence as a bare minimum though this place really has gone to shit.

I was done being an Australian theme park enthusiast long ago, but this shit is the final nail in the coffin. I lived on the Gold Coast for 21 years, but I'll never visit again because there's no reason to. Doesn't matter that AirTimeThrills raved about DC Rivals or Steel Taipan. Nothing's going to get me to cough up a dollar to visit these parks.

You’re telling me that only having 50% of the park open isn’t a reason to visit 🙃

There is literally zero reason to walk past the WB Department store - everything open (for adults) is off the entrance roundabout.

Edit: They should probably remove Doomsday from the list since they've announced it (and ripped it out of the ground)

Edit2: even off the roundabout there's still 3 attractions closed - Rivals, Flash and Wicked Witch.

Honestly - in the current environment, the reveal would not be worth the potential foot traffic to their retail offering. Having almost all their merch and F&B down main street - i'd avoid it entirely.

If you consider what the park offered prior to 2004 - Main Entrance offered BA:TRide and the SFX soundstages \ studio tour. That's it. "rides" and experiences were all through \ beyond main street. Roxy, Scooby, PASS\HWSD, Lethal, WWF, Kids, showstage and all the other various attractions that have come and gone over the years. Everything was in or past main street. Now, almost nothing is and everything is front-loaded. I realise the park has issues with noise (not a problem for indoor dark rides of course) but the front loading is so bad now you could effectively never walk past any opportunity to drain your pockets, save for the JL store at the exit. It just seems like really poor design.

Which is a big issue when they struggle to manage their annual maintenance periods because it creates a very poor first impression when almost all of the rides at the front of the park are closed. But then you head to the back of the park and everything there is actually closed.

Look it doesn’t look too bad, but definitely could have come up with some themed fencing similar to Jungle Rush or something.

The fence looks awful in my opinion WWF was my favorite ride but in the last 5 years its fallen apart and most of the effects don't work anymore so this is just another stab to the heart.

Yes it does look bad, but the fence has been this style for at least a decade to my recollection, it’s just been made taller. And while it sucks they’ve had to do this, if there were that many people dropping stuff and jumping the fence to get there items then I see the need to increase its height.

And while the height doesn’t look too significant in that photo, it’s just the perspective (as it was taken over the construction fencing) because of you look at the fence to the right next to the exit store, it’s nearly touching the ceiling. Which makes me think the new fence is at least 2m tall.

Maybe the better solution would’ve been to install two fences with 0.5-1 metre separation so it someone did drop something and decide to jump the fence, they still wouldn’t be in the ride and envelope.

All great suggestions.

And while i'd love to bash village here and say they just went with the cheapest option to solve the problem, my bet here is that their risk analyst\consultant has probably told them the more thematic options Gazza posted above weren't acceptable because it only reduces the risk but could still be climbed and only 6+foot pool fencing would eliminate the risk, and anything less than total risk elimination simply wasn't an option for them in this current risky averse world.

But surely they could have still built a themed fence the same height as this new one or at least paint it brown. I fully understand why village had to make the fence taller, but they could have done it so much better than they have. My only speculation is for some dumb reason the fence has to be that pool style and has to be black to comply with WHS otherwise they just did the cheap crap option.

I haven't been here for nearly 20 years.

I check my archives, maybe I missed a whole generation of fencing.

In my photo has have the same 70s style fencing you park your car against at the footy oval in the suburbs.

That fencing lasted until the early 2010’s, when it was replaced by the first generation of the pool fence. I remember being there in 2009 and staff were constantly yelling at people to stop climbing and sitting on top of it.

I believe this is the case. When the original pool fence was installed, the park’s presentation standards were a lot higher and they still showed care for maintaining immersive theming. I doubt the management back then would’ve installed a generic black fence if they weren’t forced to. I’d say WHS required the fence to be in that style and to make it as noticeable as possible to create a “strong visual barrier” around the ride or something like that in order to meet their particular requirements.

After seeing the fence in person, while it’s definitely not great, I have to agree that it doesn’t block the facade as much as it seemed like it would in earlier photos.

Another less than desirable visual change I noticed during my visit though were these ugly electrical cables that are now being flown through the Loony Tunes area. They extend all the way from a tree next to Marvin the Martian to the big tree near the entrance to the land.

Just so this doesn't go by unchallenged, there would be no requirement for it to be black. black is just the cheapest available option.

Now do a photo standing at the fenceline like you would if you were mum waiting for the family to come down the drop...

I was going to say this was pointed out ages ago, but that was just the cable running to speedy taxis, not all the way to the tree stage. That does look horrible, but for an area of the park that hasn't been greatly touched since opening (only edits around the periphery) there hasn't been an opportunity to run power to the centre for things not previously planned. What WB Kids needs is to be gutted and refreshed.

New discussion thread here.
