  1. Gold Coast Bulletin article in today's paper. Movie World will officially announce the unveiling of the southern hemisphere first virtual reality coaster TODAY. They are installing it on Arkham Asylum and will open in September. Sorry about poor pic quality

  2. Ehhh...upcharge. wasnt really expecting that. VR isn't super "YAY" for me, so it will entirely cost dependant to if I give it a go or not..

  3. I've tried three VR coaster options this year - Mount Mara at Bobbejaanland, and Pegasus and Alpenexpress at Europa Park. Mount Mara was just kind of OK, though that ride is all indoors and dark anyway so it's an improvement on the normal ride experience somewhat. The two at Europa were both excellent, and used the technology well. The VR on Alpenexpress even included a realistic-feeling inversion, not bad for a powered coaster! All three used the Samsung Gear headset, and all of them had a stutter at points where the device was having trouble keep up with the speed of the ride. So that makes me wonder how effective the current VR tech is going to be on a much faster ride like AA. I'll try it at least once, in any case. Hopefully the park figure out a way to do this without making dispatch times (even) worse. edit - do we know if MW are planning to charge for this? The ones at Europa were a nominal fee (2 euro), presumably due to the limited capacity.

  4. ^Absolutely. With what sounds like a limit of 8 people - for a saturday nobody is going to notice an extra 8 people with fast track

  5. You collect the headset from the staff member when you enter the load platform. You do not put on the headset until seated on the ride. Once seated it is the usual restraints and checks associated with that. A staff member comes along and tightens all straps on the headset and helps with any issues. There is a QR code on the back of the headrest in front that tells the Gear VR kit you've boarded and to load the "game". Ride as per normal whilst playing the game. Sit in the brake run for around 3-5 minutes. When leaving you hand the headset back where they clean it for the next person or put it on charge.

  6. I think AA is the best choice of ride to introduce this system, and will be interesting to see how the visuals come out, because I've seen some of the videos of it used in other parks and some of it hasn't looked that great. And hopefully it won't reduce the loading time. Does anyone know how you get them in other parks, as in, do you pick one out of a box, or are they attached the rides train, do you collect it while waiting to load the ride, or after the gates open?

  7. Maybe they have had this is the works for a while and so slowed their load times progressively over time to its current speed so we don't notice a huge impact on it when they introduce this???

  9. I keep forgetting how much a few of us talk outside of this forum. Fenced off area has been discussed as the location for the new rollercoaster and Topgolf. Hotel has been lightly mentioned and has been proposed that it may be going on the grass overflow carpark. All has been officially unconfirmed though.

  12. There could be both pay per play, and a pay per day options. Perhaps $10 for 1 ride, or $15 for an unlimited, all-day option? Because Arkham has loose item boxes, they could pay for the VR in the queue; i think there's enough room in there to put a small maned shop. Or Just outside the ride, or at the main photobooth near the MW entrance. Payment would be easily proven with a ticket, or a wristband.

  16. i nearly get a headache alone from AA i don't need another one caused by VR PLUS your not allowed to wear your glasses while on the ride so i won't see it anyway!

  18. ^That's right but the information they are getting for the hotel and lakeside precinct is not from MW. That information is from this website. MW will not be calling it a lakeside precinct. That news article was pretty much a cut & paste of the bulletin article. Bulletin often take information from Parkz. MW has not come out and talked about the hotel or lakeside precinct. If MW had released this information we would know where the lakeside precinct is located and what is in it. The location and what is it is only speculation at the moment. @pushbuttonWelcome back. There is a lot you have missed. Might I suggest you re-read every topic since you have been away.

  19. Really cool news! I'll be interested if they can pull this off. I wonder if they are working with Mack media/VR Coaster (both owned by Mack Rides) to produce the VR media, and overall experience. Enthusiasts (@aaronm's comment above) rave about the VR experiences they have created for the coasters at Europa Park. I hope they organise the queue line into 3 lanes: Front Row (no VR), VR Queue, Normal Queue. That way you can still choose to ride without the VR. Also, if they run an alternating dispatch cycle (e.g. VR Train, Normal, VR Train, ect.) it gives the ride ops a whole ride cycle of time to help a whole train of passengers to adjust the VR headset straps and make sure everything is working. So that when the train parks, the VR passengers load, put on the headsets and go. Doing it this way may help the capacity problem that is inevitable with these VR headset experiences. Not even once?

  20. I'm sure you do, but there's one video in particular that shows a vr coaster that utilises parts of track in the video. I was simply answering you saying that "might be included in a sense like it was at one of the parks overseas"

  21. I thought this when I first saw the new suit, but someone else recently posted the comic version, and the comic character has very pronounced kneecaps. I think in some way this might be seeking to emulate this, whilst also providing the actor with something suitably comfortable to kneel on whilst posing for photos with small children.

  22. The Magic Mountain VR has you in a fighter jet so no coaster track or path visible. Think we will see something unique and not done before in true Movie World style.

  23. Perfect ride for it because it's meant to have a DC theme but obviously the second you enter the lift and have a nice view of BOH and the studios that's destroyed. This should provide a truly immersive experience as isn't 'ruining' a quality coaster like say Revolution at Magic Mountain. My experience is that the guests riding with VR absolutely loved it, and I'm sure it won't be compulsory anyway. Everywhere else I've seen VR isn't available in the front row anyway so you can still get your front seat ride the traditional way.

  24. Please tell me this isn't a compulsory feature.

  25. Happy and yet sad for this. Will be good to see how they do it, sad because it's not the most comfortable ride for me so may not be as enjoyable as it could have been on GL or something else. Can't wait to see how they do it though as given all the other additions lately this should be amazing. I just hope they work on their load times a bit.

  29. A bunch of vehicles in the area today. Spoke to a maintenance guy yesterday and he said that the turntables are getting looked at and having old parts replaced. Also the western town before the big climb in the mine shaft is being stripped back and will be redecorated and weathered.

  31. It'd be even more hilarious if nothing in the park was open, and it was just an excuse to walk around the park at night. Is that a fountain in the middle there?

  36. Welcome ?? Test dummies are being loaded back on the ride this morning, so more test cycles on the way. Not a huge amount has changed otherwise, other than the new cement paths being laid to the east of the ride. I've been told that all the facades facing West are now complete. Here's a couple of pics, won't saturate with any more since there's not of change to report since the weekend.

  39. I know what's going to happen, Aussie World are going to pull off a Bermuda Triangle and shut the ride during maintenance. I thought it was only the VRTP parks that did this, at least DW have the decency to announce it will be shutting a ride ahead of time and not during maintenance.

  40. Upcharge? Yet another stupid mistake that we should've been expecting. Idea was good, but yet again the execution is going to be poor. That $5 or $10 can go towards saving up for a Star Tour.

  41. - A bunch of the upcharge attractions (in particular how overpriced they are/were, some were fixed) over the road at DW - Lack of staff around the GC theme parks even during semi-busy times of the year - Running fewer trains than they have again even in pretty busy times, in particular SE - Hyping up every tiny little thing that we get - HWSD2 - The lack of fire effects on Storm Just a bunch of little things. But I guess all the announcements the past few days seemed perfect so something had to be sacrificed, which was obviously VR being free. And I guess since it was free in America we were all expecting it here, really it was something I'd expect DW to do than MW. Also on the lighter that means the capacity won't be ruined as I'd expect you'd have to pick up the VR at another point in the park. Also I doubt it would happen since it would be pretty complicated to do so but it would be cool to incorporate the buttons on the harnesses with the 'game'.
