Someone explain the benefits of trackless on this type of ride for me please.

Well if it is trackless like the "Big Red Car" it could easily travel and stop a certain points and then pivot on it axis giving a 360 degree range of motion through certain points of the track, which would be very handy for a shooting ride (rather than a teacup style car like Buz were you spin yourself). But I think the trackless system is just to add to the illusion. Edited by rac2703

Basically, trackless dark rides. -Enhance the illusion. Instead of remembering you are on a ride on a rail, you can have a flat floor which could match in with the theming. -Unpredictability. With a normal track there is only one way you can go around it and if you can see the track ahead you can guess what happens next. With a trackless dark ride the vehicle can do all sorts of crazy stuff, scooting around. You could for instance have the car go into a large room, and zigzag back and forth, spin around, reverse etc like it has a mind of its own. With other vehicles you can have them interacting with each other, nearly crashing into each other etc.

Please...for the love of GOD do not compare this ride to Big Red Car lol...beyond off putting. I hope it'll be a proper track and not trackless. Trackless is less exciting.

Why the hate for Big Red Car? I mean obviously its squarely a kids ride. Doesn't mean the concept is not cross applicable, eg:

That's true wes... Could u imagine it being like poohs honey hunt with vehicles that can travel through areas differently each time? That would be incredible! You could have the 8 screens so every car travels past but different viewpoints of the animatronics in a pooh like craziness where u can just shoot at whatever u want.

The great thing about Sally is that they are as much a theming company as they are a ride system manufacturer. It's not too unreasonable to expect an end product that'll be the best themed attraction in the park -- or Australia. The capacity looks to be around 1,000 pph with 20 cars running. Would love to see it around 1,500-2,000 though; an attraction that soaks up crowds and offers a great family experience and repeat value with minimal queues is something our parks need more than anything.

Can anyone draw conclusions to the phrase "containers of ride parts from italy"...? Does this tell us who the manufacturer is? Do they have any previous installations anywhere? Perhaps even a history of the styles (ie: single track, double rail, trackless)...

The Bulletin article, while the newspaper may not be the most reliable, the article on the new ride did state that Sally Corp. would be building it!

$9 Mil all up is pretty darn generous actually. Consider scooby was $4 Mil more (Though obviously construction costs have escalated greatly since then) and they had to build a whole coaster! A dark ride itself is a pretty simple system if need be, and they had a building to start off with so that leaves a lot of cash for theming and technical wizardry.

Scooby Doo was $13million... Although it did include extensive building work being the extension of the roof of the old Gremlins ride building. However $9million is still alot of money. Funny enough Mick Doohan's Motocoaster was $10million.... Justice League shooting Dark Ride... such better value for $9mill then MDMC!

Yes, but don't forget that those roof extensions on scooby required extensive engineering and structural work to support that massive opening roof in case of fire... Plus - those fire-sensing eyes in the trains weren't cheap either. Both of which are getting on in years. Maybe they can incorporate both into the new ride - they've already developed that super top-secret technology in the Dippin Dots Laboratory...

Great to hear from you again after all this time Richard! I think that's a really important point regarding Sally being both the ride manufacturer and the theming company. I think there's no denying that Movie World's theming standards have slipped with their last few attractions, maybe not to a terrible level, but certainly not matching their past efforts. But with Sally on board, they will have no choice but to have great theming! Hopefully Movie World will see from the success of this ride that it is worth their while creating truly immersive and well-themed attractions

The initial outlay is cheaper. Not sure how it compares in the long run when you incorporate the price of batteries. It's really exciting to see this type of ride come to the Gold Coast. I've been dreaming about a Sally Corp dark ride in Australia for years. Fantastic to see it happening for real. Disney faced some fairly interesting technical issues with Midway Mania. Unlike Buzz Lightyear, the position of the guns is determined by rotary position encoders at the base of each gun. The article highlights some of the obstacles they had to overcome to get accurate positions with this type of system.

Oh Dreamworld, eat your heart out! PS Glad to see they finally released some new artwork/promo material to go with this attraction. Maybe they will put in a decent marketing effort afterall Edited by GoGoBoy

Maybe they will put in a decent marketing effort afterall

Except you just jinxed it - and you know of course, that they'll now sink the marketing into the toilet like they usually do until the week it's due to open - at which point they'll then invite grant denyer and the sunrise crew... and everything will come out roses...
